WASHINGTON – George Washington women's basketball will look to move to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play on Wednesday evening when they welcome in Saint Joseph's University for its conference home opener. Tip-off between the Colonials and the Hawks is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
NEW YEAR, SAME STREAK
Following its 65-63 victory over Richmond to begin A-10 play, George Washington women's basketball has now won four-straight games. The win streak, which began with GW's 68-56 win over Manhattan on Dec. 9, is tied for the longest win streak of the Caroline McCombs era.
During GW's run, the team is averaging 70.5 points and is outscoring its opponents by a +18 scoring margin. Individually, Mia Lakstigala leads all scorers with 13.8 points per game, while Mayowa Taiwo is averaging a double-double (11.5 points, 11.3 rebounds).
Should the Colonials pull out a victory against St. Joe's, it would be GDUB's first five-game win streak since the 2016-17 season.
PROTECTING THIS HOUSE
With a 5-1 record in its first six home games, GW has gotten off to its best home start in six seasons. The Buff & Blue are averaging 70 points a night on the Smith Center court, including a season-high 88-point effort against Wilmington. Meanwhile on the defensive end, GW has limited the opposition attack to an average of 54 points and a 36 percent shooting clip.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Saint Joseph's will arrive in Foggy Bottom in stellar form at 11-2 on the season and 1-0 in A-10 play following a 68-64 win over La Salle. The Hawks' success has been fueled by their ability to move the ball and stellar defense. SJU currently leads the A-10 in assist/turnover ratio (1.22) and it is third in the conference in scoring defense (60.2 ppg).
The Hawks will have three players averaging double-figures heading into Wednesday night. Sophomore Talya Brugler leads the team in scoring (16.2 ppg), followed by sophomore Mackenzie Smith (14.4 ppg) and first-year Laura Ziegler (10.2 ppg).
HISTORY AGAINST SAINT JOSEPH'S
Wednesday night will be the 67th all-time meeting between George Washington and Saint Joseph's. Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series with a 34-32 record, and the Hawks have won four out of the last five games.
When the two teams take the court Wednesday night, the Colonials will be looking for their first home win over SJU since 2017.
