Mia Lakstigala drops game-high 17 points in effort
Coming off a thrilling win in its A-10 opener at Richmond on New Years Eve, the George Washington women's basketball team looked to make it two-in-a-row to start conference play, and five-straight wins overall, against Saint Joseph's on Wednesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. Unfortunately, the front-running Hawks had other plans.
The visitors improved to a conference-best 12-2, including 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while GW slipped to 9-6 in Saint Joseph's 77-61 win.
Mia Lakstigala and Asjah Inniss (season-high 15 points) did their best to keep the score close by combining to drop 32 points on 13-of-26 shooting, but the balance of the squad had a tougher time against the St. Joe's D with the team as a whole shooting .381 en route to its 61-point night. The deficit for George Washington was 17 at its largest and hovered around 10 for most of the second half before settling on the 16-point mark.
When the Hawks had the ball, it was the troika of sophomore Talya Brugler, who led the team in scoring coming into play with 16.2 points per game, and her double-digit scoring teammates of sophomore Mackenzie Smith (14.4 ppg) and first-year Laura Ziegler (10.2 ppg), who did the damage. All three reached the 15-point mark and gave their side 46 points combined on a night when St. Joe's connected at a .605 clip from the floor and .467 from long range.
The Buff and Blue will get a good chance to get back on the winning side of the ledger in its next contest, which comes at Saint Bonaventure on Sunday at 1pm. The Bonnies entered play Wednesday night at 3-13 overall and on the wrong side of five-consecutive contests.
GW returns home a week from tonight for a Wednesday matinee against Fordham. Tip from DC on the 11th comes at noon on ESPN+.
