Nya Robertson records game-high 26 points on Saturday
WASHINGTON - In the annals of Atlantic 10 women's basketball, George Washington and Dayton are #1 and #2 all-time among current member schools in success. A historic rivalry that has seen each side claim three postseason A-10 crowns in the last 11 seasons, the sides have little trouble getting up for the showdown when they meet.
Saturday at the Smith Center, despite Dayton getting up first, GW rallied and stayed up throughout in a thorough 71-57 win. A slight 8-3 Flyers' lead early, the biggest lead Dayton would hold all game, turned into a 36-20 Buff and Blue edge at halftime, as the home team's pressure defense rattled the Dayton O in the opening half. A suffocating 2-2-1 zone forced 14 Dayton turnovers in the first half, which GDUB parlayed into 19 points on the other end.
While the defense was stingy, the offense was equally excellent, spurred by first-year Nya Robertson's 11 points in the opening 20 minutes. GW canned 6-of-14 three-pointers in the first, to build the 16-point lead, which grew to 19 in the opening minutes of the second half. As should have been expected though from last season's regular season champions, Dayton would not go down without a fight.
The Flyers embarked on a 12-1 run covering more than four-and-a-half third quarters minutes, but George Washington countered again to push the lead back to double-digits. As always, senior Mayowa Taiwo was massive in the effort. After grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds last game, Taiwo came back with another whopping 15 boards on Saturday, topping the 700-career rebound mark in the process to become just the 16th player in GW's storied history to get seven-tenths of the way to a thousand.
Robertson, playing in front of her parents who flew in from Texas, went on to finish with a game-high 26 points, as the far-and-away frontrunner for the A-10 Rookie of the Year continues to show off at the college level after coming to DC as one of the program's all-time most-heralded recruits. The frosh from Fort Worth buried 5-of-11 threes and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Senior Essence Brown did a little bit of everything to down the Flyers, contributing five second-half points, a team-high four assists, four rebounds and a team-high tying three steals. Brown's four assists led a team effort that assisted on a remarkable 17 of 23 made field goals.
Now the winners of three-straight, GW has a chance to continue to push its way up the conference standings this week. At 6-3 in the conference and battling for a top-four seed which would secure a double-bye at the A-10 Championship during the first week of March, the team hosts Duquesne on Wednesday night (2/1) at 6pm before welcoming in George Mason on Sunday at noon during Homecoming weekend. Both the Dukes and Patriots are just behind GW in the conference standings.
