The Colonials and Flyers prepare for first meeting in two years on Saturday afternoon
WASHINGTON – George Washington women's basketball will kick off a three-game homestand when it welcomes the Dayton Flyers to town on Saturday afternoon. The two teams are slated to go head-to-head at the Charles E. Smith Center at 1:30 p.m. with live coverage available locally on NBC Sports Washington and via streaming on ESPN+.
MAYOWA'S REBOUNDING MILESTONES
Following a sensational 19-rebound performance against Loyola Chicago on Wednesday, Mayowa Taiwo is continuing to cement her legacy as one of the best rebounders in program history. Taiwo's 19 boards against the Ramblers were a career-high and the most in a game for a GW player since Jonquel Jones had 21 against FGCU in 2015.
Thanks to Taiwo's dominant effort in Chicago, she'll enter Saturday's game just three rebounds shy of 700 for her career. Should she accomplish the feat against the Flyers, Taiwo would become just the 16th player in GW history to reach the 700 mark.
Finally, Taiwo is just 20 rebounds away from establishing a new single season-high in boards. Her previous career high of 225 was set last season.
HISTORIC 3-POINT SHOOTING
On Wednesday against Loyola Chicago, GDUB buried 12 3-pointers en route to its 76-61 victory. The Colonials' 3-point prowess has been on display throughout this season, and Coach McCombs' squad is currently on pace to establish itself as the best 3-point shooting team in program history.
Entering Saturday, GW has had six games with at least 10 3-pointers, including a program record 15 threes against ETSU. For perspective, those six games are more than GW has had over the last four seasons combined.
The Buff & Blue are also on pace to shatter the team's single season record for made threes (203). Entering Saturday, GW has hit 174 triples and is on pace to bury 240 for the season.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
With new head coach Tamika Willians-Jeter at the helm, traditional A-10 power Dayton is in the midst of a rebuild. The Flyers enter Saturday's game at 3-16 overall, 2-6 in conference, and come to the Smith Center having lost their last four games.
Despite the team's struggles, Dayton still has three players currently scoring in double figures. Destiny Bohanon (12.6 ppg), Mariah Perez (11.4 ppg), and Sydney Freeman (11.0 ppg) will all look to lead the Flyers' attack.
HISTORY AGAINST DAYTON
Saturday's game will be the 49th all-time meeting between George Washington and Dayton. However, due to covid cancellations and recent scheduling issues, it will be the first meeting between the two sides in over two years. The Flyers have had the more recent success in the rivalry, having won the last four meetings.
