Four Colonials score in double figures
WASHINGTON - Back home at the Charles E. Smith Center for the first time in 11 days, George Washington women's basketball looked to capture some of the home cooking that had propelled them to a 6-2 home mark entering play Sunday. Despite falling behind 6-0 in the first two minutes, GW found its footing and started to cook, going on a 39-15 run for the remainder of the half and eventually securing the 69-61 victory.
As has been the case in a multitude of games this season, it was the scoring prowess of grad student Mia Lakstigala and first-year Nya Roberston that got it done. While the GW D wasn't able to force an abundance of VCU turnovers (six), nevertheless it was the staunch commitment to putting in the work on the defensive end that keyed the other side of the ball. The Buff and Blue held the Rams to a .343 shooting percentage, and turned defense into offense courtesy of the hot hands of Lakstigala (21 points) and Robertson (16 points). The pair combined for 37 points on 14-of-25 shooting, including a scorching 6-of-11 from three.
GW's defense was particularly stingy in the second quarter, when VCU only mustered one field goal in 15 attempts, allowing the GDUB margin to swell to 18 at the half, the largest it would be at any point in the game. The Rams didn't go without a fight, however, as a 7-0 run midway through the fourth quarter closed what was a double-digit lead with 6:23 to play to a slim 59-54 mark with 4:34 to go. VCU kept butting forward and closed to within a pair at the 1:36 mark, but George Washington turned to a fresh face and a familiar one to close it out. A Robertson lay-up 1:08 to play gave the home team some breathing room, and then senior Essence Brown saved her biggest bucket for the end to give GW a six-point edge with less than thirty seconds to go. After Brown salted the game away at the line, the Buff and Blue had the win in hand.
Brown's 4-for-4 effort for the free throw keyed a team performance that buried 9-of-10 freebies in the narrow win. The senior from Galax, VA also finished with 11 points and contributed a team-high four assists. Fellow senior Mayowa Taiwo was once again Ms. Reliable, with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds in her typical powerful performance.
In snapping its mini two-game slide with the win on Sunday, GW improves to 12-8 on the season and 4-3 in A-10 play, looking to make a push up the standings as the season nears its final month of regular season play. When the squad plays again on Wednesday at conference newcomer Loyola at noon on ESPN+, it will mark the one-month mark until the final regular season contest. After visiting the Windy City Wednesday, GW returns home for the first of three-straight home dates, beginning next Saturday, January 28th vs. Dayton at 1:30pm on NBC Sports Washington.
