Mayowa Taiwo pulls down career-high 19 boards in dominant effort
CHICAGO – George Washington women's basketball made sure its first-ever meeting against Loyola Chicago was a memorable one. The Colonials buried 12 3-pointers on Wednesday afternoon and Mayowa Taiwo pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds in a 75-61 rout of Loyola Chicago.
From the opening tip, GW was all business in the Windy City. GDUB began the game with a 9-0 run that prompted an immediate timeout from the Ramblers. Loyola eventually regained its footing and the two teams traded blows with the Colonials taking a slim 18-14 lead into the second frame.
That was the closest Loyola Chicago would get to a lead and from the second quarter on, it was all George Washington. In the second frame, GW shot a mighty 69 percent, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, and pushed the lead to a game-high 23 points. Taiwo was unstoppable in the first half, registering her seventh double-double of the year before halftime. As a team, GW shot 50 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
After halftime, the Buff & Blue continued to tickle the twine from downtown. The team buried two more treys in the third quarter courtesy of Mia Lakstigala, who scored a game-high 19 points in her return home to Illinois.
In the final stanza, Loyola made GW sweat a little following an 8-0 run to begin the frame that cut the lead to 10. However, Nya Robertson continued to showcase her closer ability. The first-year scored nine of her 16 points in the last frame and helped GDUB close out the win.
With the victory, GW moves to 5-3 in Atlantic 10 play. The Colonials will now return home to the Charles E. Smith Center for a stretch of three straight games. The homestand will tip off on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Dayton.
