Buff & Blue won the second game, 4-0
WASHINGTONÂ - Sierra Lange went the distance in the circle in Saturday's doubleheader split vs. Dayton on the Mount Vernon Campus, allowing just one run over 14 innings of work.
GW's ace was the hard-luck loser in the opener dropping a 1-0 decision before she authored her 15th career shutout in game two to help the Buff and Blue rebound to earn a 4-0 triumph.
Lange was economical throughout, navigating 13 hits by inducing four double plays and recording nine strikeouts against one walk. She also reached base five times, including in all four of her plate appearances in the second game.
GW 4, Dayton 0:Â After absorbing its first Atlantic 10 loss of the season, the Buff and Blue bounced back quickly in game two.
Lange led off the game with a double before Alexa Williams and Alessandra Ponce singled to chase Dayton starter Catherine Jensen before an out was recorded. Hannah Eslick would add an RBI single in the frame to make it 2-0.
The score stayed there until the third when Ponce blasted a solo home run the opposite way over the right-field wall. It was her third of the season and the 25th of her decorated career.
GW added on in its final at-bat, pushing across an insurance run via four walks in the bottom of the sixth. Alexa Williams picked up an RBI with a free pass that forced in Maggie Greco.
In her second complete game of the day, Lange was effective pitching to contact en route to her 15th victory of the spring. The veteran right-hander worked around six hits thanks to a trio of double plays, including a huge one to squash a Dayton threat in the sixth in which Williams made a catch in right and fired home to get a runner trying to score. Her only strikeout of the contest came the batter before that to help her get out of the jam unscathed.
Offensively, Lange reached in all four of her at-bats via the double, two HBPs and a walk. Ponce finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Williams and Greco also reached twice in the victory.
Dayton 1, GW 0:Â Dayton ace Kelsey Gumm came out on top of the pitchers' duel in the opener.
The Flyers scored the game's lone run in the top of the fifth when Kaelene Walter tripled with two outs and later raced home on a throwing error.
GW managed at least one base runner in every inning but ultimately couldn't score while leaving 12 on base. The Buff and Blue had runners thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on singles in the first and third innings.
After six shutout innings from Gumm, Dayton turned to its bullpen in the final frame. The Flyers shuffled through a pair of relievers as Williams singled and Parker walked before Gumm returned to the circle to get the final two outs and close out the victory.
Lange was electric in the first game with eight Ks over the seven innings. She mostly avoided trouble besides the fifth inning, but even there, she was able to get a pop out with the bases loaded to limit the damage.
GW's offense was shut out for just the third time this season in spite of six hits and seven walks. Parker reached in all four of her at-bats in the opener with a pair of singles, an HBP and a walk, and Williams also collected a pair of hits.
UP NEXT:Â GW will aim to earn the A-10 series victory on Sunday in a noon start vs. the Flyers at The Vern.
