Buff & Blue improved to 11-1 in A-10 play
WASHINGTONÂ - Clutch swings from Maddie Spell and Mia Parker and another gem from Sierra Lange powered GW softball to a 4-1 win over Dayton on Sunday afternoon to clinch an Atlantic 10 series victory on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Spell's go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the fourth was the Buff and Blue's first hit of the game, and Parker added on in the sixth with a solo homer to back Lange, who was superb again in her third complete game of the weekend.
After dropping the series opener, GW rebounded to take the final two vs. the Flyers to bump its A-10 record to 11-1 and further solidify its spot atop the conference standings.
On Sunday, the Buff and Blue managed just three hits but made them count.
The home side pushed across the game's first run in the opening inning thanks to Lange's impressive base running. She reached on an error, moved up two bases on a sac bunt and then beat the throw home on Alessandra Ponce's grounder to short to make it 1-0.
After Dayton evened the score on Chloe Wong's solo homer in the top of the fourth, the Buff and Blue hit back with an immediate answer. Parker and Maggie Greco walked before Spell roped a shot into the left-field corner to make it 3-1.
Parker's blast over the left-field fence to lead off the sixth padded the lead. It was her fourth long ball of the season, capping a sterling week in which she slashed .500/.625/.833 over five games.
Lange made clutch pitches on the way to her 16th win of the season. GW's ace worked around five hits and three walks to allow just the one run over seven frames. She stranded eight Flyers on the bases, including multiple runners in the first, third and sixth innings.
After hitting the leadoff batter in the seventh, Lange retired the top three batters in the Dayton lineup to close out the victory.
The graduate student from Plano, Texas, deftly handled her heavy workload on the weekend, finishing with a 0.67 ERA over the 21 innings. She recorded 13 Ks, including four in the finale.
GW continues its homestand next week, hosting Howard on Wednesday at 2 p.m. before welcoming George Mason to The Vern for a series that begins on Friday afternoon.
