Buff & Blue scored late to take opener
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball returned to action Saturday on the Mount Vernon Campus, splitting a tightly-contested doubleheader vs. George Mason.
The Buff & Blue scored late to edge the Patriots, 2-1, in the opener before the visitors landed a 4-3 win in eight innings in the second game.
GW ace Sierra Lange continued a strong run in the circle, allowing just a pair of runs while striking out 10 over 10 2/3 innings of work, including a complete-game victory in the first game.
GW 2, Mason 1:Â Lange came out on the winning end of a pitchers' duel after the Buff and Blue manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth without a hit leaving the infield.
A Mia Parker walk and a Hannah Eslick HBP stoked the decisive rally, and after a wild pitch, the game's first run scored when Olivia Vinyard raced home on Maddy Dwyer's bunt single. Maddie Spell then tacked on an insurance run with a sac fly that brought home Eslick.
In the top of the seventh, Lange navigated trouble to close out the victory. A leadoff double and an RBI single put the potential tying run on first base, but the veteran pitcher buckled down to retire the final two batters to end the game.
Lange held the Patriots hitless into the fourth and yielded just a run on four hits with seven Ks over the seven frames in her 17th W of the season. She also had one of the team's two hits in the contest vs. George Mason's Cheyenne Van Pelt with a single in the fifth.
Eslick and Parker both reached twice with a BB and an HBP in the victory.
Mason 4, GW 3 (8 innings):Â The Patriots salvaged the split thanks to Haley Taormina's solo home run on the first pitch of the extra inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Dwyer extended the game with a two-out double, but Mason reliever Julia Anderson promptly stranded her there with a threat-ending strikeout.
Earlier, GW took a 1-0 lead on Darbie Stancil's RBI double in the third inning, and after Mason scored twice in the fourth to go in front, the Buff and Blue promptly answered in the bottom of the inning with RBI hits from Eslick and Valentina Perrone to restore the advantage.
However, the Patriots tied it on Rachel Warrens' sac fly in the fifth and pushed the game to extra innings thanks to strong relief work from Anderson, who pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Lange retired 11 of the 12 batters that she faced in relief of Dwyer but took the loss after allowing Taormina's homer.
The bottom of the order provided a spark in game two. Spell walked three times hitting seventh, Perrone provided the two-out, run-scoring hit at No. 8 and Stancil went 2-for-3 with her first RBI of the season in the nine hole.
UP NEXT: GW will welcome George Mason back to The Vern on Tuesday to finish the series in a 3 p.m. first pitch. To accommodate the rescheduled A-10 matchup, the Buff and Blue's previously scheduled contest set for that afternoon vs. Virginia has been postponed.
