Ponce & Lange starred in Buff & Blue victory
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball stayed perfect in Atlantic 10 series with Tuesday's 5-1 win over George Mason on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Buff and Blue claimed the rubber game in the Revolutionary Rivalry set paced by the strong work of veterans Alessandra Ponce and Sierra Lange.
Ponce cracked her fourth homer of the season in the opening inning and finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, while Lange went the distance in the circle for her 18th victory and also contributed an RBI and a run scored.
With the victory, GW improved to 13-2 vs. A-10 competition with three weekends of conference play left to go.
The Buff and Blue wasted no time Tuesday, jumping to a 2-0 lead after three batters in the bottom of the first. Lange led off with an infield single, stole two bases and then scored on Alexa Williams' sac fly before Ponce followed with a no-doubt shot over the left-field wall.
The home side tacked on in the fourth, taking advantage of a George Mason error to plate two runs without a hit. Valentina Perrone's sac fly scored Maddie Spell, and Maggie Greco later came home on a wild pitch.
The lead reached 5-0 in the sixth after Greco roped a leadoff double into the left-field corner, moved up on a groundout and scored on Lange's long sac fly to center. It was her second two-bagger and fifth extra-base hit of the season.
Meanwhile, Lange kept the Patriots scoreless into the final inning. GW's ace ended up allowing a run on six hits with six strikeouts over the seven frames.
Lange had help from GW's nationally-ranked defense, especially in a third inning that finished with Hannah Eslick and Ponce turning a popup into a double play to help her escape a jam.
George Mason finally got on the board with a pair of doubles in the final inning, but Lange followed the run-scoring hit with a strikeout and a groundout to finish the victory.
Offensively, the top of the GW lineup made the difference Tuesday with Lange, Williams and Ponce combining to go 5-for-7, plus three walks, with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
GW heads on the road this weekend to continue its A-10 slate, visiting Rhode Island for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
