Buff & Blue set for three-game set vs. the Rams
Following a three-week homestand, GW softball ventures on the road this weekend, visiting Rhode Island for a three-game Atlantic 10 series.
The Buff and Blue will face the Rams in a Saturday doubleheader at URI Softball Complex before the teams square off in a single game on Sunday. All three contests are set to be broadcast via ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW closed out a series win over George Mason on its home field Tuesday afternoon, scoring a 5-1 victory in the rescheduled rubber game vs. the Patriots with veterans Alessandra Ponce and Sierra Lange leading the way.
Ponce cracked her fourth homer of the season in the opening inning and finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, while Lange went the distance in the circle and also contributed an RBI and a run scored.
The victory moved the Buff and Blue to 13-2 in A-10 play, good for the top spot in the standings.
TOUGH OUTS:Â Alexa Williams and Lange have been among the toughest student-athletes to strike out in the nation this season, ranking fifth and 16th, respectively.
Williams, GW's leading hitter at .378, has struck out just twice in 98 at-bats with the last one coming on March 5 vs. Notre Dame.
Lange, who has a .306/.391/.472 slash line out of the leadoff spot, has just four Ks in 105 at-bats with just two of them coming since Feb. 20.
As a team, GW's pitching staff has tallied 198 strikeouts through 35 games this season while its batters have collectively struck out 119 times.
ELITE STUFF: With Tuesday's triumph over George Mason, Lange moved into the national top 10 in wins with 18. GW's ace has six more victories than any other pitcher in the A-10, boosted by a 10-2 mark in 12 appearances vs. conference competition.
For the season, Lange also paces the A-10 in strikeouts (146), innings pitched (148.0), complete games (18) and starts (25). With a strong run lately, she has lowered her season ERA to 2.51, good for second on the circuit behind Dayton's Kelsey Gumm (1.92).
Lange now has a career record of 85-39 with a 2.58 ERA and 708 Ks across 746 2/3 innings over 143 appearances.
DYNAMITE DEFENSE: GW played error-free defense in Tuesday's victory, boosting its fielding percentage for the season to .978, best in the A-10 and No. 11 nationally. The Buff and Blue are ahead of last season's program record fielding percentage of .977.
UP NEXT:Â GW will be busy next week with five games over a six-day span, starting with a Tuesday trip to Delaware State. The Buff and Blue host Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon before welcoming Saint Louis to The Vern for Senior Weekend.
