Buff & Blue scored 23 runs in pair of wins
KINGSTON, R.I. - GW softball kept its road Atlantic 10 record perfect with a doubleheader sweep at Rhode Island on Saturday, exploding for 23 runs on the day.
The Buff & Blue rolled to an 8-2 win in the opener before triumphing in a 15-10 slugfest in the second game.
Alexa Williams was the offensive catalyst in the first game, finishing 3-for-4 with five RBIs, highlighted by a sixth-inning grand slam that buried the Rams, and Mia Parker shined in the second game with her first career four-hit performance, including a two-run homer in the sixth that put the visitors ahead for good.
GW 8, Rhode Island 2:Â After trailing 2-1 early in the opener, the Buff and Blue scored the game's final seven runs to claim a comfortable victory.
Sierra Lange tied the game at 2 in the top of the third with her third long ball of the season and then scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on a double from Williams.
GW was able to find separation in the sixth. Maddie Spell drove in a run with an RBI single, and later, Williams cracked her second grand slam of the season over the left-field fence to set the final margin.
Lange went the distance in the circle, holding URI scoreless over the final five innings. GW's ace improved to 19-7 with an outing in which she yielded two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Williams equaled her career high with the five RBIs, and Lange matched a career best with three runs scored in the victory.
Maggie Greco had a pair of hits, including an RBI double, and Spell and Parker both reached twice as well.
GW 15, Rhode Island 10:Â The Buff and Blue completed the doubleheader sweep by rolling up 15 runs on 16 hits to pull away from the Rams.
GW wasted no time scoring nine runs over the first two innings. Parker, Hannah Eslick and Maddy Dwyer had RBI hits in the second before Taylor Puig came through with the biggest hit of her young career with a bases-loaded triple that pushed the lead to 9-1.
URI kept charging, though, and managed to tie it at 9 with a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. The visitors hit right back with a six-spot in the top of the sixth. Parker's two-run homer following a double by Alessandra Ponce put the Buff and Blue ahead, and Greco and Lange both added two-run singles later in the frame to pad the lead.
Parker equaled a program record shared by many with her 4-for-5 effort at the plate. The senior from Los Angeles drove in three runs and scored three times.
GW totaled seven extra-base hits in all, including a pair of doubles from Eslick. Eight different Colonials recorded hits in the victory with Lange, Eslick, Dwyer, Greco and Ponce notching two apiece.
Dwyer pitched the first five innings to pick up her sixth win of the spring before Lange closed out the victory by handling the final two frames.
