Buff & Blue continue homestand this weekend
Riding a 13-game winning streak, GW softball welcomes Dayton to the Mount Vernon Campus for a three-game weekend series.
The Buff and Blue are set to take on the Flyers in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon before a single game on Sunday with a noon first pitch.
It's a rematch of last season's A-10 Championship final in which GW won twice on the final day of the double-elimination tournament to claim the title.
LAST TIME OUT: GW equaled the program record consecutive wins with a Wednesday sweep of Hampton at The Vern.
The Buff and Blue beat the Pirates, 4-0, in the opener behind Sierra Lange's program-record 14th career shutout and then scored a 4-2 victory in game two, boosted by a pair of RBIs from Mia Parker, including the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
SIZZLING STRETCH: Maggie Greco has reached base in 12 straight games, a run in which she's hit a team-best .419 (13-for-31) with eight walks. The junior from Bolingbrook, Ill., has four multi-hit games in that span, and she cracked her first career grand slam on March 26 in an 8-0 win at St. Bonaventure.
An A-10 All-Rookie selection last spring, Greco has raised her season batting average by more than 100 points during this stretch to .299, and her on-base percentage of .372 ranks fifth on the squad thus far.
DYNAMIC DUO:Â This winning streak has been stoked by the superb pitching of Lange and Maddy Dwyer, who have combined to go 13-0 with a 2.02 ERA across 83 innings.
Lange and Dwyer have combined for 75 strikeouts while yielding just 60 hits in a run that started with a 4-3 win over James Madison on March 6. They have two solo shutouts apiece in that span and combined on another blanking.
Lange was also a part of the program's other 13-game winning streak back in March 2018, earning three victories in five appearances along the way as a first-year.
SCOUTING DAYTON:Â The Flyers (11-17 overall) enter the weekend slotted fifth in the A-10 standings at 6-5. Emily Daniel leads the A-10 in batting average at .435, while Kelsey Gumm (6-5) has the league's top ERA at 2.10 and 71 strikeouts in 70 innings.
At last season's A-10 Championship, Dayton dealt GW a loss on the opening day of the tournament before the Buff and Blue beat the Flyers in back-to-back contests two days later to hoist the trophy.
Alexa Williams hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning of the first win and then GW rode the momentum to a 7-2 victory in the second game behind two RBIs apiece from Jenna Cone and Alessandra Ponce.
UP NEXT:Â GW's homestand continues next week with a Wednesday showdown vs. Howard (2 p.m.) and a weekend set vs. George Mason.
