Buff & Blue beat Hampton twice Wednesday
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball defeated Hampton twice Wednesday afternoon on the Mount Vernon Campus to run its winning streak to 13 and equal the program record set back in March 2018.
The Buff and Blue beat the Pirates, 4-0, in the opener behind a terrific pitching performance from Sierra Lange and then scored a 4-2 victory in game two, boosted by a pair of RBIs from Mia Parker, including the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
Lange allowed just two hits in her program-record 14th career shutout, while Parker totaled a team-high three hits on the day, including a double, to pace the offensive attack.
GW 4, Hampton 0:Â The Buff and Blue got the bats going late to back Lange's gem in the opener.
The contest stayed scoreless into the bottom of the fifth when the home side was able to manufacture a run. Maddy Dwyer led off with a single, moved to second on a pinch hit from Gabby Polsky, took third on Valentina Perrone's sac bunt and then scored on a sac fly from Lange.
GW padded its lead with three runs in the sixth. Hannah Eslick's RBI double brought home Parker, and Dwyer later scored two more with a single.
That late offensive burst was plenty for Lange, who won her eighth straight start with another dominant effort. GW's ace twice struck out the side in a nine-K performance and allowed just three total base runners in blanking the Pirates.
Hampton's only threat vs. Lange came in the sixth after a bunt single and a two-base sac bunt put the tying run on third with one out. The graduate student squashed the rally thanks to a swinging strikeout and a sterling defensive play from Hannah Eslick at short to end the frame.
Parker reached in all three of her plate appearances with a single, a double and a walk, and Dwyer and Greco tallied two hits apiece.
Polsky's single in the go-ahead rally was her first collegiate hit.
GW 4, Hampton 2:Â The Buff and Blue needed more late offense in the second game to sink the Pirates.
This time, it was 2-2 in the fifth inning, and Alexa Williams started the decisive rally with a double. After Alessandra Ponce walked, Parker sliced the go-ahead single down the right-field line.
Later, pinch runner Olivia Vinyard scampered home on a two-out wild pitch to provide an insurance run.
From there, Dwyer put Hampton down 1-2-3 in the sixth and then navigated a leadoff single in the seventh to close out the doubleheader sweep.Â
The veteran right-hander worked around seven hits and a pair of walks over seven solid frames in her fifth straight victory. She retired 10 of the final 12 batters that she faced after Hampton tied it with a pair in the fourth.
Williams and Maddie Spell picked up two hits apiece in the second game, and Perrone contributed an early RBI double that made it 2-0 in the second inning.
UP NEXT:Â GW is back at The Vern this weekend, hosting Dayton in an Atlantic 10 series consisting of a Saturday doubleheader and a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon on both days.
