Cade Fergus swats pair of dingers in winning effort
ARLINGTON, Va. - All season long, George Washington baseball has shown its resiliency on the diamond. On Saturday, the Colonials once again had a chance to rise to the occasion, and they did so in style. With two outs in the ninth, Cade Fergus crushed a game-tying home run to right field, and one inning later, Logan Leax walked it off with his own two-run bomb to give GW a 6-4 comeback victory over Rhode Island.
For the 19th time this season, the Colonials scored a run in the first inning. Fergus led off the first with a single, before coming around to score on a Steve DiTomaso RBI triple. GW would add another run in the first after Derek Ripp lined an RBI single up the middle.
It didn't take long for Rhode Island to tie the game up. In the second, the Rams plated two thanks to a home run by Rob Butler. However, GW would quickly take the lead back in the third after Fergus launched his first homer of the day to put the Buff & Blue up 3-2.
The score would remain the same until the eighth, when URI got the upper hand. With a man on and one out, Addison Kopack crushed a homer to left-center to put the Rams up 4-3.
From there, the Colonials relied on Trevor Kuncl to help keep them in the game. The senior escaped a jam in eighth, before throwing a scoreless top of the ninth, and setting the stage for GW's walk-off.
With George Washington down to its final out in the ninth, Fergus strutted to the plate and without hesitation launched the first pitch he saw into right to tie the game up at 4.
Following another scoreless frame from Kuncl in the 10th, the Buff & Blue sent The Tuck into a frenzy when Logan Leax's two-run dinger cleared the fence. The bomb gave the Colonials the 6-4 win, and their second walk-off victory of the year.
Fergus was GW's offensive MVP on Saturday, going 3-for-5 with two homers, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
On the mound, the Colonials received a strong outing from starter Connor Harris, who allowed just two runs over 5.1 innings. Meanwhile, both Rich Pfluger and Kuncl put together scoreless appearances.
Up next, GW will look to complete the series win over Rhode Island on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
