Buff & Blue travel to Delaware State and host Mount St. Mary's
GW softball is set for its final non-conference games of the spring to begin a busy week.
The Buff and Blue travel to Delaware State on Tuesday in a 2 p.m. start before hosting Mount St. Mary's on the Mount Vernon Campus on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ahead of its Senior Weekend series vs. Saint Louis.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW won its sixth Atlantic 10 series of the season last weekend, sweeping three games at Rhode Island.
The Buff and Blue showcased their offensive firepower, piling up 32 runs while hitting .386 as a team. They exploded for four innings of five runs or more on the weekend, including a five-run seventh in a 9-4 victory in the finale after the game went to the final inning tied.
Sierra Lange, Maggie Greco and Alexa Williams notched six hits apiece on the weekend. The team totaled 18 extra-base hits vs. the Rams, including four doubles from Hannah Eslick and a pair of long balls from both Lange and Williams.
Lange secured a pair of wins to improve to 20-7 on the season and 12-2 vs. A-10 competition, tallying a 2.33 ERA over 15 innings of work in three appearances.
MILESTONE WATCH: Ponce had two doubles vs. URI to push her career total to 53, one away from former teammate Jenna Cone's program record of 54. The graduate student from Henderson, Nev., is tied for 17th among all active D-I student-athletes nationally in that category. She now has 11 two-baggers on the season, good for second on the club behind Eslick and tied for second in the conference.
Lange sits at 14 career triples, just one behind GW Athletics Hall of Famer and groundbreaking Olympian Elana Meyers Taylor for most three-baggers in program history. She's tied for 13th in the nation among active student-athletes there.
CAST A SPELL:Â Maddie Spell reached base seven times in three games last weekend via three hits and four walks to raise her on-base percentage this spring to a team-best .500.Â
The Suwanee, Ga., native has shown impeccable plate discipline, working out a team-high 18 walks to go along with 20 hits and a pair of HBPs. She's now earned 17 free passes in as many A-10 contests, and five of her 12 hits vs. conference opponents have gone for extra bases with three doubles and two homers.
SCOUTING DELAWARE STATE:Â The Hornets were swept over the weekend at Norfolk State to fall to 4-29 on the season and 3-15 in MEAC play. Jaelyn Baker is the club's top hitter with 24 hits and 13 RBIs in 32 games, while Sydney Hoffman is its top pitcher with a 4.25 ERA in 80 2/3 innings of work.
SCOUTING MOUNT ST. MARY'S:Â After taking a weekend series from Bryant, the Mountaineers sit No. 2 in the NEC standings at 15-6 in conference action and 23-18 overall.
Fifteen of Abigayle Perry's 29 hits have gone for extra-bases, and she's driven in a team-high 24 runs in 41 games. Olivia Murphy (7-3, 2.26 ERA in 74 1/3 innings) and Amanda Berkley (11-6, 2.30 ERA in 106 1/3 innings) form a quality 1-2 punch on the pitching staff.
UP NEXT:Â GW closes out its home slate, hosting Saint Louis for Senior Weekend. The three-game set kicks off with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon before concluding with a single game on Sunday at noon with a senior recognition ceremony to follow.
