Spell earned first collegiate win Tuesday
DOVER, Del. - GW softball earned its fifth straight win on Tuesday, blowing past Delaware State, 10-2, in six innings.
After falling into an early hole, the Buff and Blue flipped the script by scoring the final 10 runs of the game, including a seven-spot in the top of the sixth that allowed them to end the road game via run rule.
Maddie Spell starred vs. the Hornets, going the distance in the circle for her first collegiate win and also finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Alessandra Ponce knocked in the visitors' first two runs with a third-inning double that gives her 54 two-baggers for her career to tie Jenna Cone for the program record.
Delaware State landed the first punch Tuesday with two runs on three hits in the opening inning, but Spell settled in from there and the offense followed.
After Ponce tied the game in the third, Spell led off the fourth with a double, moved up on a sac bunt from Maggie Greco and scored on Taylor Puig's groundout.
The score stayed there until GW piled on in the sixth. The Buff and Blue scored their seven runs via six singles, three errors and a walk and sent 13 batters to the plate.
Lange knocked in the first and last runs in the onslaught with a pair of RBI singles. Spell and Parker both had two-run hits in the inning, and Maddy Dwyer knocked in the other run with a groundout.
On the day, seven different Colonials recorded hits and eight scored runs. Ponce, Lange, Spell and Parker tallied two RBIs apiece.
The reigning A-10 Player of the Week, Lange was on all five times out of the leadoff spot with three walks and two hits, and Spell and Greco both reached three times.
A day after being named A-10 Rookie of the Week, Spell made the most of her first career start in the circle, holding the Hornets scoreless over the final five frames. She allowed two runs on seven hits in all and struck out three in the longest outing of her young career.
Now 27-12 overall, GW looks to keep building momentum on Wednesday when it welcomes Mount St. Mary's to the Mount Vernon Campus for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
