Sophomore slugger drove in three runs in victory
WASHINGTONÂ - Alexa Williams homered, doubled and drove in three runs on Wednesday to propel GW softball to a 4-1 win over Mount St. Mary's in its non-conference finale.
The sophomore slugger put the Buff and Blue in front with a two-run double in the third inning and then added on with her team-leading ninth long ball of the season in the fifth.
It was the sixth straight victory for GW, which improved to 11-2 on its home field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Mount St. Mary's stopped a first-inning GW threat by turning a triple play and then struck first in the contest with Abigayle Perry's solo homer with two outs in the top of the third.
GW was ready with an answer with a two-out rally in the bottom half. After a strikeout and a groundout, No. 9 hitter Abby Schaub extended the inning by working a walk, and the top of the order followed with three straight hits to plate three runs.
Sierra Lange singled, Williams doubled to score two and Alessandra Ponce's hit brought home Williams to make it 3-1.
In her next at-bat, Williams sent a no-doubt homer the opposite way for what turned out to be the game's final run.
That offense backed Maddy Dwyer, who went the distance in the circle for her seventh win of the spring.Â
The graduate student from California allowed just the one run on five hit while striking out three. She never allowed more than one base runner in any inning and finished off the complete game with a 1-2-3 seventh to swiftly squash the visitors' comeback hopes.
Offensively, GW kept the pressure on Mount St. Mary's with an eight-hit attack.
Williams' power display boosted her season batting average to .387 and her RBI total to 42 in 38 games.
Hannah Eslick also recorded a pair of hits vs. the Mount, including her A-10 leading 15th double of the spring.
Lange reached twice with a walk and a single. The graduate student from Texas had reached base in 10 straight plate appearances (five walks and five hits) dating back to Sunday's game at Rhode Island before popping out in the fifth.
GW now turns attention to its Senior Weekend series vs. Saint Louis at The Vern. The Buff and Blue will face the Billikens in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon and a single game on Sunday at noon with the senior recognition ceremony to follow.
