Alexa Williams secured a Saturday sweep of SLU with clutch homer
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball clinched its second straight Atlantic 10 regular season title in epic fashion on Saturday afternoon with Alexa Williams' walk-off three-run home run delivering a 6-3 win over Saint Louis to finish out a doubleheader sweep.
Earlier in the day, the Buff and Blue beat the Billikens, 3-1, behind a gem from Sierra Lange.
After opening up Senior Weekend on the Mount Vernon Campus in style, GW now sits at 18-2 in conference play with four games remaining.
Lange picked up both victories in the circle and also tallied four hits on the day, while Alessandra Ponce finished 4-for-6 at the plate, including her 55th career double to move into the top spot on the program's career list.
GW 6, Saint Louis 3:Â The Buff and Blue finished the sweep with a memorable victory.
After the Billikens rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh, the home team found a way to hit back and walk it off. Mia Parker and Hannah Eslick reached base to open the inning, and after a pair of outs, Williams launched a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield fence to set off a raucous celebration at home plate.
Earlier, Lange and Ponce provided the offense to build the GW lead.Â
In the third inning, Lange singled, stole second and scored the game's first run on her classmate Ponce's RBI single.Â
Two innings later, Lange singled, moved up on Maggie Greco's sac bunt and scored on Ponce's hit back through the middle. Hannah Eslick's hit later in the frame drove home Ponce to make it 3-1.
Maddy Dwyer pitched the first five innings of the contest, deftly navigating trouble to allow just one run despite yielding eight hits. The highlight came in the fourth when she allowed three straight singles to begin the inning and then induced three straight outs to keep the Billikens off the board.
In her relief appearance, Lange ran into trouble in the seventh but managed to strand the potential go-ahead run at third and put the Buff and Blue in position to win it. She's now 22-7 on the season.
The GW offense pounded out 11 hits over the seven innings, led by a 3-for-4 effort from Eslick. Ponce was on three times with her two RBI singles and a walk, and Lange and Dwyer both reached twice.
GW 3, Saint Louis 1:Â A fast start in the opener provided all the offense that Lange would need to get the day off to a winning start.
The Buff and Blue pounded out four of their seven hits in the opening inning to plate a pair of runs. Lange singled, Ponce hit her history-making 55th double and then Mia Parker brought them both home with a shot into the gap in right-center.
Saint Louis edged within 2-1 on Jane Kaniecki's RBI single in the fourth, but Lange added an insurance run with a two-out single to score Maddie Spell in the sixth and then proceeded to shut the door on the Billikens in the seventh.
Lange allowed a run on four hits with 10 Ks in her complete-game victory, and she also helped herself by reaching three times with a pair of singles and a walk.
Ponce's double was her 13th of the season to complete her climb past former teammate Jenna Cone to the top of the all-time list. She finished 2-for-3 in the opener with a run scored.
Parker hit her 11th two-bagger of the season and now has 26 RBIs to rank tied for second on the squad.
UP NEXT:Â GW looks to finish out the series sweep on Sunday vs. the Billikens in a noon start. Senior Day festivities will follow postgame.
