Colonials and Hawks get underway Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball returns to the diamond this weekend when it travels north on I-95 to Philadelphia for a three-game series with Saint Joseph's. This weekend's action gets underway Friday at 3 p.m., followed by games on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Coverage of the first two contests will be available on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT:
GW tallied double-digit hits for the 19th time this season, but it wasn't enough to topple William & Mary at Tucker Field on Tuesday. The Tribe rode 17 hits, including three homers, to an 11-5 victory. Offensively, first-years Ty Acker and Matt McCowan led the way with two hits apiece.
ALL OF THE ACCOLADES:
This week, several members of the Colonials received individual accolades from both the A-10 Conference, and national collegiate baseball outlets. On Monday, the A-10 announced that Friday starter Harrison Cohen and batterymate Anthony Frechette were named A-10 Pitcher of the Week and A-10 Co-Player of the Week, respectively. Frechette batted over .500 for the week, while Cohen threw eight scoreless innings in a win against Dayton last Friday.
On Tuesday, Colonials' shortstop Steve DiTomaso was named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list by the College Baseball Foundation. The Wallace Award is given annually to the nation's top shortstop.
DEJA VU:
For the second straight season, the Colonials have gotten off to a flying start in conference play. Currently, GW is 5-1 in A-10 action, matching its start to the conference slate last spring. In 2021, the Buff & Blue won six of their first seven conference games while picking up back-to-back series wins against VCU and Davidson.
BATTLE OF THE OFFENSES:
When GW and St. Joe's meet this weekend, it will be a battle of the A-10's premier offenses. Currently, either the Hawks or the Colonials are ranked first in almost every A-10 hitting category. St. Joe's leads the conference in batting average (.316), runs (271), homers (45), RBI (248), SLG% (.526), OBP (.422) and total bases (572). Meanwhile, GW is first in the A-10 in hits (343), at-bats (1,175) and doubles (74).
SCOUTING THE HAWKS:
Speaking of St. Joe's offense, the Hawks' potent attack has helped them to a 17-13 record through their first 30 games this year. While the team's 17 total wins rank tied for second in the conference, it sits at just 3-3 through the first two series of conference play.
Individually, the Hawks are led by the duo of sophomore Brett Callahan and senior Andrew Cossetti. Callahan is slashing .404/.515/.651 with 6 homers and an A-10 leading 42 runs scored, while Cossetti paces both the Hawks and the A-10 in homers (13) and RBIs (44).
