Buff & Blue split final day of Liberty Invite
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Paced by Maddy Dwyer, GW softball closed out the Liberty Invitational with a 4-3 victory over James Madison on Sunday evening.
The graduate transfer via Stanford was excellent in the circle on the way to her first win as a member of the Buff and Blue and also cracked her first career home run vs. the Dukes, who advanced to the Women's College World Series a year ago.
Earlier in the day, GW rallied from a 6-0 hole in the opener to take the lead before Rutgers answered back in the seventh to claim a 9-8 victory.
Alexa Williams hit a three-run homer vs. the Scarlet Knights and finished the weekend with five extra-base hits in as many games.
GW 4, JMU 3:Â In the second game of the day, the Buff and Blue bounced back with a strong start and managed to hold off the Dukes' late push.
GW recorded three of its six total hits in the bottom of the first and jumped on top with a two-run single from Mia Parker. The Buff and Blue added another run in the third before pushing the lead to 4-1 on Dwyer's long ball over the left-field fence to lead off the fifth.
In the final inning, Dwyer showed poise in finishing off the Dukes. The veteran right-hander retired the first two batters before three straight Dukes came through with extra-base hits. With the potential tying run on second base, she buckled down to get a fly out to close out the complete-game victory.
Dwyer allowed three runs on six hits with five Ks in her finest outing of the season. With her homer, the California native became the sixth member of the club to go yard this spring.
Williams finished 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice vs. the Dukes, and Alessandra Ponce added an RBI single in the third.
Parker's two-run single scored Sierra Lange and Williams and gave her four RBIs on the day.
Rutgers 9, GW 8: After the Scarlet Knights raced out with six runs in the opening two innings, the Buff and Blue exploded for eight of their own between the third and fourth to go in front.
The entertaining battle stayed there until Rutgers mustered a final charge. Kayla Bock's three-run home run with one out in the seventh proved to be the difference for the Big 10 squad.
Down 6-0 in the third, Maddie Spell sparked the offense with a leadoff double, and Lange and Williams followed with run-scoring hits.
GW charged ahead by plating six runs on seven hits in the fourth. The bottom of the order came through again with Maggie Greco, Valentina Perrone and Spell providing hits before Williams cranked a game-tying long ball.
After a pitching change, Ponce singled and Parker connected on a go-ahead, two-run homer that made it 8-6.
Following Rutgers' seventh-inning rally, GW got two on base via a Greco walk and a Perrone single in the bottom of the inning before Ashley Hitchcock retired the final two batters to finish out the victory.
In the circle for GW, Spell provided her second tremendous relief outing vs. a Power 5 opponent in as many days. The Georgia native pitched a career-high 5 1/3 innings, allowing just the three seventh-inning runs on two hits. She walked the first batter that she faced before retiring 13 straight leading into the final frame.
Williams had two hits and a walk, highlighted by her first homer of the season and four RBIs, while Ponce finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Perrone and Spell both had a pair of hits for the first time in their careers, and Greco reached three times with two singles and a walk.
Parker's homer was her second of the season and the third of her career.
Hannah Eslick tallied her fifth double of the season, which is tied with Parker for the team lead.
UP NEXT:Â GW opens A-10 play next weekend with a three-game set at Saint Joseph's, starting with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.
