Buff & Blue took two from St. Joe's
MERION STATION, Pa. - After waiting out inclement weather that pushed back its Atlantic 10 debut, GW softball rolled into conference play Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Saint Joseph's behind excellent pitching and a trio of long balls.
The Buff and Blue started the day with a 3-1 win over the host Hawks behind ace Sierra Lange before Maddy Dwyer delivered a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory.
Alexa Williams homered in both ends of the doubleheader, and Lange also went yard in the second game.
GW 3, SJU 1:Â In the opener, the Buff and Blue put up three early runs and then relied on Lange's pitching to bring home the victory.
Hannah Eslick plated the first run in the second inning with some deft baserunning, escaping a rundown between third and home to score on a wild pitch.
An inning later, Williams smashed a two-run shot the opposite way to make it 3-0. The sophomore's first dinger of the day brought home Lange, who had walked leading off the frame.
Lange allowed a run in the third but managed to hold down the Hawks from there.
The graduate student from Plano, Texas, navigated a white-knuckle finish to close out her seventh win of the spring. The home side loaded the bases in the seventh via a single and two walks before the GW ace coaxed a lineout to second for the final out.
In her gem, Lange ceded a run on six hits over the seven innings with five Ks and also helped her own cause by stealing a base and scoring a run.
In addition to Williams' decisive blast, GW got hits from Eslick, Maggie Greco and Alessandra Ponce vs. SJU starter Emily Siler.
GW 2, SJU 0:Â Dwyer sparkled in the circle in game two, allowing just a pair of bunt singles in her first shutout as a member of the Buff and Blue.
GW only managed four hits vs. Amanda Herr but two of them left the park. Williams connected on her second homer of the day in the opening inning, and in the third, Lange's solo shot made it 2-0.
That proved enough run support for Dwyer, who struck out four and walked just one over seven scoreless frames.
The Hawks' only real threat came in the third when they loaded the bases with one out via a single, a walk and an error, but Dwyer recovered to get a forceout at the plate and a groundout to second to squash the threat.
The veteran right-hander was flawless from there, retiring the final 14 batters that she faced. She was effective pitching to contact, totaling 12 groundouts in the outing, including the last three batters in a swift seventh inning.
Williams' two-homer day boosted her season total to three and put her at seven extra-base hits across her past seven games, while Lange's homer was her second of the spring.
Ponce singled in the sixth to push her hitting streak to eight games. Mia Parker was responsible for the Buff and Blue's other hit with a double in the opening inning.
UP NEXT:Â The Buff and Blue will wrap their series vs. the Hawks with a single game on Wednesday at noon before turning attention to its home-opening set vs. Fordham this weekend at the Mount Vernon Campus.
