Williams' grand slam highlighted run-rule victory
MERION STATION, Pa. - Highlighted by a grand slam from Alexa Williams, GW softball completed an Atlantic 10 series sweep of Saint Joseph's on Wednesday with an 8-0 win in five innings.
The Buff and Blue buried the Hawks early, scoring all their runs in the first two frames with Williams' third homer in as many games the major blow.
Sierra Lange and Maddy Dwyer combined on a two-hit shutout, closing out a dominant series for the GW pitching staff.
GW was ahead after two batters thanks to back-to-back doubles from Lange and Williams to open the game. The Buff and Blue pushed the lead to 3-0 in the opening inning with an RBI double from Hannah Eslick and a run-scoring groundout from Maggie Greco.
GW's first five hitters reached in the second and all of them ended up scoring.
Williams' latest long ball went to straightaway center for her first career grand slam and brought home Maddie Spell, Valentina Perrone and Lange.
Alessandra Ponce followed with a double and later scored on an Eslick single that made it 8-0.
Meanwhile, Lange rolled through the Saint Joseph's order for the second straight day, allowing two hits with three strikeouts in four scoreless frames. Dwyer finished the sweep with a 1-2-3 fifth.
For the series, the two pitchers combined for a 0.37 ERA with one run allowed across 19 innings. They had more Ks (13) than hits allowed (eight) in the series.
With her double and homer, Williams finished the set with four extra-base hits, four runs scored and eight RBIs. It was her team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the spring.
The Buff and Blue pounded out 11 hits in all in the series finale, with six of them for extra bases. That total included multi-hit efforts from Williams, Lange, Eslick and Spell.
Ponce's double extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Now 10-10 on the season and 3-0 in A-10 play, GWÂ gets ready for its home debut vs. Fordham on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Buff and Blue will face the Rams in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday with a noon first pitch.
