Buff & Blue welcome Rams for A-10 set
Fresh off a sweep of its first Atlantic 10 series, GW softball opens its home schedule this weekend with a three-game set vs. Fordham.
Â
The Buff and Blue will face the Rams in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. before playing a single game Sunday with a noon first pitch.
Â
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW rolled to an 8-0 win in five innings over Saint Joseph's on Wednesday to complete a series sweep to begin A-10 play.
Â
Pitchers Sierra Lange and Maddy Dwyer were terrific in the circle throughout the series, combining for a 0.37 ERA with one run allowed across 19 innings. They had more Ks (13) than hits allowed (eight) over the three victories.
Â
Lange earned a pair of victories vs. the Hawks to push her record to 8-5 on the season, while Dwyer tossed eight scoreless innings, including a two-hitter in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader for her first shutout as a member of the Buff and Blue.
Â
Alexa Williams homered in all three games, including her first career grand slam in Wednesday's finale. The sophomore from California finished the series hitting .444 (4-for-9) with 14 total bases, four runs scored and eight RBIs. She has nine extra-base hits in her past eight games.
Â
Alessandra Ponce also had hits in all three contests, bumping her hitting streak to nine games. The graduate student from Nevada is hitting a team-best .397 (23-for-58) on the season.
Â
SHE'S OK:Â Lange leads the A-10 with 73 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings, and she's also the toughest on the circuit to strike out with just two Ks in 65 at-bats.
Â
In a testament to her all-around excellence, the graduate student from Texas paces the conference in wins (eight) and runs scored (19) this season, as well.
Â
FEEL THE VERN:Â GW went 15-1 on its home field last spring, including a 12-0 mark in A-10 play.
Â
The Buff and Blue were simply dominant at The Vern, outscoring their opponents 99-21 with five run-rule victories. They hit .343 as a team while clubbing 18 home runs and 33 doubles in the 16 games, and their pitching staff compiled a 1.30 ERA with 108 strikeouts in 102 innings.
Â
Over the past five seasons, GW is 80-26 (.755) at home.
Â
SCOUTING THE RAMS:Â Fordham (9-10, 1-1 A-10) has already played four games this week after splitting a conference doubleheader vs. Saint Louis on Monday and sweeping two games from Stony Brook on Wednesday.
Â
Rachel Hubertus leads the A-10 with six home runs, and Brianna Pinto is tops in the league with 12 steals.
Â
After sharing the league title with Fordham in 2019, GW eliminated the Rams at last season's A-10 Championship with an 8-1 victory on the way to the title.
Â
UP NEXT:Â GW is back at The Vern next Wednesday, hosting a doubleheader vs. Coppin State starting at 1 p.m. The Buff and Blue will head to St. Bonaventure next weekend for another three-game conference series.
