Buff & Blue edged Fordham twice on Saturday
WASHINGTON - GW softball made its return to the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday in thrilling fashion, sweeping a doubleheader from Fordham to stay perfect in Atlantic 10 play.
In the opener, Maddie Spell and Alexa Williams homered in a five-run sixth inning to help the Buff and Blue complete the comeback for a 5-4 victory. The home side carried a seven-run lead into the final inning of game two before holding on for a 7-5 victory thanks to a heads-up defensive play from Valentina Perrone and Maggie Greco for the final out.
Spell paced the offense, going deep in both ends of the twin bill, while Williams reached base five times on the day and scored four times.
GW 5, Fordham 4:Â The Buff and Blue ceded back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning and trailed 4-0 going to the bottom of the sixth before flipping the script to pull out the victory.
GW had been limited to two hits before sending eight batters to the plate in their decisive rally. Hannah Eslick and Greco reached before Spell's first career blast cleared the left-field fence and drew GW within a run.
With two outs, Sierra Lange singled to chase the Fordham starter and Williams greeted the new pitcher with a no-doubt drive that put the home team in front. It was the sophomore's team-leading fifth homer of the season and fourth of the week.
Lange returned to the circle for the seventh, working around a one-out single to finish off the Rams. GW's ace rebounded from a tough start to earn her ninth win of the season after allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over the seven innings.
In addition to the clutch swings from Spell and Williams, Greco had a pair of hits and Mia Parker hit her seventh double of the season to tie for the team lead.
GW 7, Fordham 5:Â The Buff and Blue cruised into the final inning before the Rams nearly completed a comeback of their own.
After going hitless over the first six frames vs. Maddy Dwyer, Fordham had its first five batters reach base and ended up scoring five runs on six hits in the final inning.
The Buff and Blue extinguished the rally with some alert defense. Sydney Wells' single down the right-field line brought in two runs, but Perrone alertly fired behind the runner who had rounded third too far and Greco applied the tag for the final out.
GW built its lead by scoring in four of the first five innings. Alessandra Ponce hit a pair of RBI doubles, and Eslick and Parker also provided run-scoring hits.
Spell's second homer of the day made it 7-0 with one out in the fifth.
Dwyer narrowly missed her first collegiate no-hitter, allowing just two walks and two HBPs over the first six innings. The graduate student from California hung tough amid trouble in the seventh and managed to pick up her third win of the season and second of the week.
Ponce finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Williams scored three times in the game's first four innings. Eslick and Spell posted two hits apiece as part of the 10-hit attack.
UP NEXT:Â GW concludes the weekend series at The Vern with a noon first pitch on Sunday vs. Fordham. The Buff and Blue will be back home on Wednesday, welcoming Coppin State for an afternoon doubleheader.
