Alexa Williams & Maddy Dwyer homered Sunday
WASHINGTONÂ - Long balls from Alexa Williams and Maddy Dwyer helped propel GW softball to a 3-1 win over Fordham on Sunday to complete an Atlantic 10 series sweep on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Williams put the Buff and Blue in front with a two-run home run in the third inning before Dwyer added on with a solo shot in the fourth.
Sierra Lange made that advantage stand up with another gem. After allowing a run in the opening inning, she blanked the Rams over the final six frames. She allowed a run on four hits with a season-high 10 strikeouts in her 10th victory of the season and fourth this week.
The sweep completed a tremendous week for the Buff and Blue in which they went 6-0 vs. A-10 competition to open their conference slate, including their first-ever series sweep vs. Fordham.
In Sunday's finale, GW had to come from behind after Lange allowed a leadoff double to come around and score, and the home team was able to do it by flexing its power.
Williams' blast was her team-leading sixth of the season, fifth of the week and second of the series. It scored Lange, who had led off the third inning with a bunt single.
Dwyer's homer to lead off the next inning was her second of the season and first at The Vern.
Lange avoided serious trouble in the late innings, retiring 10 of the final 12 batters that she faced. The graduate student from Texas stranded a pair of Rams in the sixth with an inning-ending groundout, and she rolled through a 1-2-3 seventh that included a pair of Ks to finish it.
Lange reached three times with a single, a double and a walk, and Alessandra Ponce and Maggie Greco recorded two hits apiece.
In addition to her homer, Williams walked twice, finishing the week with an impressive .438/.571/1.438 slash line.
Winners of seven straight overall, the Buff and Blue are slated to return to The Vern on Wednesday to host Coppin State in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.Â
