Looking to continue a seven-game winning streak, GW softball heads to St. Bonaventure for a three-game set that has been moved up due to impending weather.
The Buff and Blue will face the Bonnies in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. before the teams play a single game on Saturday with a noon first pitch.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW swept a pair of A-10 series last week, winning three times at St. Joseph's before securing three more victories at home vs. Fordham.
Alexa Williams was named A-10 Player of the Week for the second time this season and also garnered D1 Softball Non-Power 5 Player of the Week recognition after homering in five of the six games while piling up 12 RBIs. The sophomore from El Cajon, Calif., slashed .438/.571/1.438 with six of her seven hits going for extra bases. She slugged her first career grand slam in the series finale vs. Saint Joseph's.
Sierra Lange picked up her second A-10 Pitcher of the Week award after going 4-0 with a 1.68 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 25 innings. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, also contributed at the plate, slashing .353/.522/.647 with two doubles, a home run and six runs scored.
Alessandra Ponce had a team-high eight hits on the week, including four doubles, to lift her club-leading batting average to .406.
DOUBLE TIME:Â GW combined for 12 doubles in the six games last week and now has 35 two-baggers through 23 games to lead the A-10.
Ponce is tops in the league with eight doubles on the year, and Mia Parker and Hannah Eslick are tied for second with seven apiece.
Nine different Buff and Blue hitters have recorded at least one double so far this season.
COMING ON STRONG:Â After dropping her first four decisions of the season, Maddy Dwyer has won three straight starts.
The graduate student from Orange, Calif., beat 2021 College World Series participant James Madison, 4-3, on March 6 with a complete-game effort before tossing a two-hit shutout at Saint Joseph's last Tuesday.
On Saturday, she carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before weathering Fordham's final charge in a 7-5 victory.
Dwyer has lowered her ERA to 4.68 while recording 30 strikeouts across 43 1/3 innings. She's also made a difference offensively with 13 hits, including a homer in Sunday's finale vs. Fordham.
SCOUTING ST. BONAVENTURE:Â The Bonnies (3-14, 1-5 A-10) picked up their first A-10 win of the season last Saturday, defeating Dayton, 6-2, behind two home runs from Grace Perechinsky. Ally Haskell earned that victory and leads the team with a 2.46 ERA in 37 innings.
GW clinched the A-10 regular season title last spring with a four-game sweep vs. St. Bonaventure at Joyce Field. In the finale, Ponce set a program record by knocking in eight runs in a 14-5 win over the Bonnies.
