Series schedule adjusted again due to inclement weather
*Please note the schedule was revised again on Saturday afternoon due to continued inclement weather in the region, pushing back the series start from Sunday to Tuesday.*
GW softball opens up Atlantic 10 play with a three-game set at Saint Joseph's.
Due to inclement weekend weather and the ensuing poor field conditions, the schedule has been adjusted to include a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at noon and a single game on Wednesday with another noon first pitch. In addition, the Buff and Blue's non-conference matchup at Hampton originally scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed with a makeup date to be announced.
This is the first of eight A-10 series for the Buff and Blue, who went 23-1 during the conference regular season last spring and then claimed the league tournament title as well to earn their first NCAA berth.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW went 2-3 at the Liberty Invitational, bookending the weekend with victories over Lehigh and 2021 College World Series participant James Madison.
Alexa Williams led the way offensively, earning A-10 Player of the Week honors for the first time after slashing .438/.471/.875 over the five games while piling up five extra-base hits, six RBIs and four runs.
Maddy Dwyer had a memorable weekend finale vs. JMU, picking up her first win in Buff and Blue with a complete game in the circle and also slugging her first career home run.
GOING UP:Â Alessandra Ponce had nine hits in 16 at-bats (.563) last weekend to boost her season batting average to an even .400.
After going 1-for-9 on opening weekend, the graduate student from Nevada has been on a tear, recording at least one hit in 12 of the past 13 games, including her current six-game hitting streak. She's 19-for-41 (.463) over the past three weekends of competition with four doubles and a home run.
Entering the series vs. SJU, Ponce's batting average ranks fourth in the A-10 this season. She's a .334 career hitter, and her 181 total hits rank seventh in program history.
CALL TO THE 'PEN:Â Maddie Spell was busy last weekend, seeing action in relief in three of the five games.
The sophomore from Georgia pitched effectively vs. a pair of Power 5 opponents. She worked five innings in the matchup with then-No. 25 Notre Dame last Saturday, and the next day, she went a career-high 5 1/3 frames against Rutgers, retiring 13 straight Scarlet Knights at one point.
After entering the weekend with three career innings pitched, Spell tossed a total of 10 2/3 innings at the Liberty Invitational, finishing with a 4.59 ERA and four strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS:Â SJU sits at 4-10 on the season after having last weekend off. The Hawks won the A-10 North Pod a year ago and were picked third in the conference preseason poll.
SJU has gotten early contributions from its newcomers with Sarah Cancila, Kayla Tauber and Kaelin Cash all honored as A-10 Rookie of the Week already this season.
GW has fond memories at SJU Softball Field after winning the A-10 Championship there last spring. On their way to the title, the Buff and Blue eliminated the host Hawks with an 8-0 run-rule victory.
In addition, Sierra Lange pitched her first career no-hitter there last April in a regular season contest, shutting down the Hawks in another 8-0 victory.
UP NEXT:Â GW makes its home debut next weekend, hosting Fordham for three games on the Mount Vernon Campus. The action begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19, starting at noon.
