Softball Splits Doubleheader vs. Lehigh

Alexa Williams cracked three doubles on the day
LYNCHBURG, Va. - GW softball split a twin bill vs. Lehigh on Friday to begin the Liberty Invitational.
The Buff and Blue opened the morning with a 7-4 victory before the Mountain Hawks took the second game, 5-1.
Alessandra Ponce totaled four hits and three runs scored across the doubleheader, while Alexa Williams doubled three times on the day.
GW 7, Lehigh 4:Â After a slow offensive start in the opener, the Buff and Blue kicked into gear to score five runs in their final two at-bats to shake off the Mountain Hawks.
Ponce and Hannah Eslick both had three hits and two RBIs, while Alexa Williams doubled twice and drove in two runs in the victory.
GW went on top in the opening frame with a two-out RBI single from Ponce scoring Williams, who had doubled.
After Lehigh tied it at 1 in the top of the fourth, the Buff and Blue answered with Mia Parker's RBI double scoring Ponce.Â
With the game now deadlocked at 2, they made more two-out magic in the fifth with an RBI single from Ponce and a two-run double from Eslick making it 5-2.
Williams padded the lead in the sixth, scoring Darbie Stancil and Sierra Lange with her second double of the contest.
The reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, Lange went the distance in the circle, claiming the victory after allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits.Â
The graduate student from Texas allowed at least one base runner in six of the seven frames but was able to limit the damage by recording eight Ks. She helped her own cause with two hits, two runs scored and her team-leading sixth steal of the season.
Lehigh 5, GW 1:Â The Mountain Hawks flipped the script in game two behind a gem from Gabriella Nori.
GW used singles from Ponce, Abby Schaub and Maddy Dwyer to push across the game's first run in the second inning but managed just two hits the rest of the way vs. Nori, who went the distance allowing a run on five hits.
Lehigh jumped in front in a three-run third, boosted by three straight two-out hits. The score stayed there until the Mountain Hawks added on with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.
With her work in the circle, Dwyer kept the Buff and Blue within striking distance most of the way, yielding three earned runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
GW's five hits came from five different student-athletes, including doubles by Williams and Valentina Perrone.
UP NEXT:Â GW's schedule for the remainder of the weekend has been revised. The Buff and Blue are set to play a single game vs. No. 25 Notre Dame at 2 p.m. on Saturday before playing a doubleheader vs. Rutgers (1 p.m.) and James Madison (3 p.m.) on Sunday.
