Buff & Blue will play two more on Sunday at Liberty Invite
LYNCHBURG, Va. - In its latest challenge amid a tough non-conference slate, GW softball was downed by #25 Notre Dame, 8-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Invitational.
After a scoreless opening frame, the nationally-ranked Fighting Irish scored in five of their final six at-bats to pull away. They went ahead on a run-scoring bunt hit from Cassidy Grimm in the second before chasing Buff and Blue ace Sierra Lange in a three-run third.
Maddie Spell pitched the final five innings for GW in the longest outing of her collegiate career. The sophomore left-hander allowed four runs on eight hits with a career-high three strikeouts. She also tallied one of the Buff and Blue's five hits on the day.
GW's offense, meanwhile, was shut down by the duo of Alexis Holloway and Shannon Becker, who combined for eight Ks and no BBs while pitching Notre Dame to its ninth-straight victory.
In the defeat, Sidney Torres recorded her first career hit with a pinch single in the seventh, and Valentina Perrone also notched a hit as part of her first career start behind the plate.
GW will take on another stiff test on Sunday to close out the weekend with back-to-back contests vs. Big 10 foe Rutgers and reigning national runner-up James Madison, beginning at 1 p.m.
