Buff & Blue aim for 11th straight win
GW softball returns to the Mount Vernon Campus on Wednesday, hosting local foe Georgetown in a 3 p.m. start.
LAST TIME OUT: GW was dominant last weekend, outscoring St. Bonaventure 34-2 over three run-rule victories to improve to 9-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
The Buff and Blue put up a season-best run total in an 18-2 victory to start the series before winning the next two games by identical 8-0 scores.
For the series, GW hit .415 as a team with 12 of 34 hits going for extra bases while limiting the Bonnies to two runs on 10 hits with 22 strikeouts in 16 innings. All nine regulars in the batting order hit at least .333, paced by Sierra Lange, Maddy Dwyer and Maddie Spell, who all hit an even .500.
Lange stood out among many shining performances with her all-around excellence. The graduate student from Plano, Texas slashed .500/.583/.700 with two doubles, two RBIs, five runs scored and three steals while going 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 13 strikeouts in nine innings of work. With her first solo shutout of the spring in Saturday's finale, she tied Kara Clauss atop the program's all-time list with 13.
STUPENDOUS STREAK:Â GW is riding a 10-game winning streak in which it has outscored its opponents 66-16.
The offense has been rolling with a .323/.406/.568 slash line during the run with 21 doubles and 14 home runs. The top of the order has led the way with Lange, Alexa Williams and Alessandra Ponce combining to hit .424 (39-for-92) with 13 two-baggers and seven homers.
The pitching has been just as tremendous with Lange and Dwyer combining to go 10-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 57 Ks in 62 innings.
DRIVE 'EM IN: Williams has knocked in 14 runs during the winning streak to boost her team-leading RBI total to 29 through 26 games. Thanks to that scorching run, the El Cajon, Calif., native leads the A-10 in total RBIs and ranks 29th nationally in RBIs per game at 1.12.
After driving in 41 runs during her All-Conference rookie season, Williams has 70 RBIs in 74 career contests. She now has 20 multi-RBI games, including eight this season.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS:Â Georgetown enters the contest at 11-13 on the season and 2-2 in Big East play. Alyssa Chavez, a graduate transfer via Saint Louis, is the Hoyas' top hitter with a .380 batting average, six home runs and 21 RBIs, while Julia Parker (3-6, 3.76 ERA in 67 innings) and Kayla Dunn (6-3, 4.01 ERA in 68 innings) have handled a majority of the pitching.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be the first meeting between these neighbors since March 17, 2019, when the Buff and Blue scored an 8-1 victory at The Vern to even the all-time series at 7-7.
UP NEXT: GW will take a break from competition this weekend before hosting Hampton next Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Buff and Blue return to A-10 action on April 9-10 with a series vs. Dayton at The Vern.
