ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - GW softball flexed its offensive muscle on Friday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 doubleheader sweep of St. Bonaventure at Joyce Field.
In the opener, the Buff and Blue exploded for a season-best run total in an 18-2 win in five innings, and they followed up with an 8-0 victory over the Bonnies in six innings.
On the day, GW put up 26 runs on 27 hits with eight doubles and a pair of home runs. Alessandra Ponce, Maddy Dwyer, Sierra Lange and Alexa Williams posted two extra-base hits apiece in an onslaught that pushed the team's conference record to 8-0 on the spring.
GW 18, St. Bonaventure 2 (5 innings):Â To begin the day, GW jumped in front with a four-run second inning and then poured it on with six in the fourth and eight more in the fifth. Six different Colonials scored at least two runs in the lopsided triumph.
The Buff and Blue sent 13 batters to the plate in their eight-run fifth, which included hits from seven different student-athletes.
The final result was the program's largest margin of victory since a 20-0 win over Farleigh Dickinson on March 11, 2018.
Dwyer led the prolific offensive attack with a single, a double, a home run and three RBIs, while Lange went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Ponce had a pair of hits and three RBIs, and Maddie Spell and Valentina Perrone were catalysts at the bottom of the lineup with both reaching three times via two hits and a walk.
Lange handled the first four innings in the circle to win her fifth straight start. The veteran right-hander allowed just two hits and recorded seven strikeouts against one walk. She yielded a solo home run to the third batter that she faced and then held the Bonnies in check before giving way to Megan Osterhaus for the final frame.
GW 8, St. Bonaventure 0 (6 innings):Â The Buff and Blue kept the bats rolling in the second game, pounding out eight more runs on 12 hits in another run-rule victory.
Lange created a run with her legs in the opening inning. She beat out a bunt single, stole second and later came around to score on a throwing error.
The Buff and Blue made it 2-0 in the second on an RBI single from Perrone that brought home Maggie Greco.
Ponce doubled the advantage in the third with her second homer of the season. The two-run shot scored Williams, who'd led off the frame with a single.
The top of the order helped put the game out of reach in the sixth. Lange, Williams and Ponce started the inning with back-to-back-to-back doubles, jumpstarting a four-run burst.
Hannah Eslick's RBI single scored Mia Parker to make it 8-0 and bring the run rule into play again.
The top four hitters in GW's lineup combined for nine hits, seven runs and five RBIs.Â
Ponce finished 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and three RBIs, Williams was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk and Lange and Parker tallied two hits apiece.
Meanwhile, Dwyer tossed her second shutout of the season, limiting the Bonnies to four hits with six Ks over six scoreless innings. The graduate student from California got stronger as the game went on, allowing just one base runner over the final four innings. She's won four straight starts to improve to 4-4.
