Buff & Blue swept Charleston Southern on Saturday
LYNCHBURG, Va. - GW softball clinched a winning weekend at the Liberty Classic with a Saturday sweep of Charleston Southern.
The Buff and Blue pulled away late for an 8-2 win in the opener before securing a 4-2 victory in the second game.
Fittingly on the day she became the program's all-time leader in starts, Sierra Lange handled all 14 innings in the circle across the doubleheader, earning a pair of victories while allowing four runs on six hits with 13 Ks against two walks. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, also cracked her first home run of the season in the opener.
Mia Parker went deep in game one, as well, and Alessandra Ponce had two doubles in the second game, including the go-ahead hit in the bottom of the fifth.
GW 8, Charleston Southern 2:Â The Buff and Blue grabbed the lead early and then pulled away late in the first game of the day.
Maggie Greco tripled to lead off the game and later scored on a wild pitch to put GW on top right away.
The score stayed there until the fifth inning when the Buff and Blue padded their advantage with five more runs. They sent nine hitters to the plate in the crooked frame, highlighted by Lange's solo shot, an RBI double by Parker and a two-run double from Hannah Eslick. Abby Schaub's run-scoring infield hit made it 6-0.
That was plenty for Lange, who only allowed a pair of late solo homers. The veteran pitcher ceded only three total hits and struck out seven.
Parker paced the offense with her first career three-hit performance. All of them went for extra bases with two doubles and her seventh-inning homer, and she tallied two runs scored and two RBIs along the way.
At the top of the order, Greco, Lange and Alexa Williams all reached twice with a hit and a walk apiece.
GW 4, Charleston Southern 2:Â Lange's pitching and some timely hitting delivered a victory in the second game to finish off the sweep.
The game was tied in the fifth before Ponce's RBI double brought home Maggie Greco to put the Buff and Blue in front. Parker followed with a groundout that scored Williams with an insurance run.
Lange took it from there, pitching her best at the end of her busy day. After Ashley Meckley's game-tying solo homer in the third, she retired the final 14 hitters that she faced. The result was her 72nd career win in her 105th collegiate start.
Ponce finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI doubles, and Taylor Puig drove in her first career run with a sac fly in the second that brought home Eslick. Darbie Stancil's double in the sixth was her first career extra-base hit.
UP NEXT:Â GW will be back at the same field next weekend for the Liberty Invitational. The Buff and Blue are set to play five games over three days vs. Rutgers, Notre Dame, Lehigh and James Madison.
