Buff & Blue rolled past Maine in opener
LYNCHBURG, Va. - GW softball got started at the Liberty Classic on Friday with a doubleheader split.
The Buff and Blue rolled past Maine in the opener with a 9-1 victory in six innings before the host Flames took a 6-3 decision in game two.
Sierra Lange paced the GW offense with three hits, four runs scored and two RBIs on the day.
Alexa Williams totaled four RBIs to boost her team-leading total to nine for the season, and Alessandra Ponce recorded three hits while pushing her hitting streak to six games.
GW 9, Maine 1 (6 innings):Â In the opener, the Buff and Blue scored in five of their six at-bats on the way to their first run-rule victory of the season.
Six different student-athletes posted multiple hits vs. the Black Bears, led by Lange and Mia Parker, who both contributed a pair of extra-base hits. Williams singled twice and drove in three runs in the triumph.
Lange was the beneficiary of all that run support, picking up the win with six strong innings in the circle in which she allowed a run on four hits. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, racked up eight strikeouts without a walk in her third win of the spring.
Helping her own cause, Lange staked GW to a quick lead in the top of the first, smacking a triple before scoring on Williams' sac fly.
The Buff and Blue added an unearned run in the second and then two more in the third on RBI hits from Williams and Parker.
The GW advantage reached 7-0 in the fourth, boosted by some deft small ball. Maggie Greco drove in a run with a bunt, stole a base and later scored in the frame.
In the sixth, Lange's double brought home Greco, and Williams followed with an RBI single to make it 9-0.
Maine got on the board in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple from Kya Enos, but Lange recovered to get the final two batters and end the game there.
Liberty 6, GW 3:Â The Buff and Blue battled the reigning Atlantic Sun champion Flames but ultimately couldn't overcome a five-run fourth inning.
The game was scoreless in the top of the fourth when GW broke through offensively. Lange started the frame with a bunt single, moved up on Williams' bunt and then scored on Ponce's single into right.
Liberty had an answer, though, pushing across five runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning. The home side tied it on an RBI single from Karlie Keeney with one out and later managed three straight two-out hits to add on.
GW edged within striking distance at 5-3 with two runs in the fifth on a two-out single by Williams. Rookie Taylor Puig had started the rally with a walk in her first career at-bat before a hit from Maddy Dwyer and a walk from Lange loaded the bases.
McKenzie Wagoner closed out the Buff and Blue from there, ceding just a Hannah Eslick single over the final two innings to record the save for Liberty.
For the Buff and Blue, Dwyer got the start in the circle and yielded just two earned runs over her four innings. Maddie Spell was solid in two frames of relief, yielding a run on two hits in the second outing of her career.
GW's five hits came from five different student-athletes. Lange reached twice with the bunt single and a walk and scored her fourth run of the day.
UP NEXT:Â GW will face Charleston Southern in back-to-back games on Saturday at Liberty with the doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m.
