Buff & Blue face Maine, Charleston Southern & host Flames
GW softball will spend its first of two consecutive weekends in Lynchburg, Va., taking part in the Liberty Classic.
The Buff & Blue are set to face Maine and the host Flames on Friday before taking on Charleston Southern in a Saturday doubleheader at Liberty Softball Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: GW went 1-3 last weekend at UNCG's Spiro Classic, claiming a Sunday victory over Rider behind a shining all-around performance from Sierra Lange.
Lange earned her second win of the season in the circle vs. the Broncs and also hit .308 for the weekend with a team-high three runs scored and a pair of steals.
Alessandra Ponce had hits in all four games on the way to a .417/.462/.750 slash line with a pair of extra-base hits and three RBIs.
JUST GETTING STARTED:Â Lange's start in the circle on Sunday vs. UNCG was the 102nd of her decorated career in Buff and Blue. The graduate student from Plano, Texas, could become the program's all-time leader in that category this weekend, sitting just two behind former teammate Sarah Costlow (2015-18) for the No. 1 spot.
Lange currently ranks tied for third among active student-athletes nationwide in career starts, behind only South Florida's Georgina Corrick (107) and Washington's Gabbie Plain (105). She's made the most of those outings to earn a spot on the active leaderboard in a multitude of other categories, including complete games (67, fifth), wins (69, sixth), innings pitched (630 1/3, seventh) and strikeouts (595, 19th).
FAMILIAR TERRITORY: Five GW veterans - Lange, Ponce, Hannah Eslick, Megan Osterhaus and Mia Parker - last played at Liberty as part of the program's first-ever postseason appearance at the 2019 National Invitational Softball Championship.
The Buff and Blue didn't face the host Flames that week while going 2-2 with wins over Marshall and Appalachian State. Lange was named to the All-Regional team after starting all four games and posting a 2.37 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: The reigning Atlantic Sun champion, Liberty continues to receive votes in all the major national polls. After dropping their first five games of the season vs. staunch competition, the Flames rebounded to win five straight games in Florida last week to even their record.
Maine went 1-4 on its opening weekend of competition at Georgia Southern. The Black Bears were picked sixth in the America East preseason poll.
Charleston Southern sits at 3-6 after splitting four games at a home tournament last weekend. The Buccaneers were tabbed seventh in the Big South preseason rankings.
UP NEXT:Â GW will make the same trip next weekend for the Liberty Invitational and games vs. Notre Dame, Rutgers, Lehigh and James Madison.
