Colonials return to the diamond this weekend to begin 2022 campaign
WASHINGTON - GW baseball will make its long-awaited return to the field this weekend, traveling to the Lone Star State to match up with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros. First pitch for this weekend's series is scheduled for 8 p.m. (EST) on Friday, followed by games at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
ABOUT LAST YEAR: GW put forth a strong effort in 2021, finishing with a 26-18 overall record and the most wins in the A-10's South Division (14). While the Buff & Blue narrowly missed out on the A-10 Tournament, GW ended the year as the only A-10 team to beat eventual champion VCU, taking three of four from its conference rivals.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT 2022: This season, GW will have an influx of new talent in its ranks. The Colonials bring in 18 new faces to go along with 15 returners from last year's squad. Senior Noah Levin, who was a member of the 2021 A-10 All-Conference First Team, headlines the GW returners this season. Alongside Levin is fellow senior Cade Fergus, who started all 44 games in center field for GW last season, and 2021 A-10 All-Rookie team member Steve DiTomaso.
READY TO RAKE: This season, George Washington will look to build off last year's electric offensive campaign. In 2021, the Colonials were the best offensive team in the A-10, ending the season with a league-high .293 team batting average. The Colonials also ended the year with the second-fewest strikeouts in the conference, while driving in 263 runs.
OPENING SERIES STARTERS: This weekend, Coach Gregg Ritchie will hand the ball off to a trio of starters that he hopes will make an impact on the mound all season. On Friday, redshirt senior Harrison Cohen will toe the bump for GW, followed by sophomore Connor Harris on Saturday, and grad student Justin Solt on Sunday. All three starters will be looking to build up their arms from last season, as the three pitchers combined for just 114.0 IP in 2021.
OUTLOOK ON UTRGV: A year removed from finishing as the runner-up in the Western Athletic Conference, the UTRGV Vaqueros begin 2022 with high expectations, having been picked second in the WAC Preseason Poll. Offensively, the Vaqueros led the WAC in hitting last year, but graduated six starters and will now rely on a slew of transfers to help score runs.
On the mound, UTRGV's big gun is Friday night starter Kevin Stevens. Stevens, who was picked as the WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, went 7-4 with a 3.17 ERA in 2021. In 15 starts, including three complete games and one shutout, he pitched 93.2 innings, striking out 97 while allowing just 78 hits and 20 walks.
