Mayowa Taiwo scores 18 points, brings in career-high 17 rebounds in winning effort
WASHINGTON- When the Atlantic 10 women's basketball schedule reached its midpoint, George Washington found itself with a lot of room to improve looking up at the rest of the conference. Four straight wins later, the Buff and Blue have made things interesting in a big pack in the standings. After a 65-57 beating of George Mason on Wednesday night, in which GW never trailed after the first quarter, the team is staring down three more games in the regular season in its quest to continue its climb up the standings before next month's A-10 Championship in Delaware.
The rivalry between the local foes hasn't been much of a contest historically, with GW typically dominating its nearby neighbor to the west, including 11-straight wins that spanned the calendar years of 2012-18. Though Mason rattled off three-straight thereafter, GW righted the ship and claimed four more consecutive wins before falling, 52-46, on January 29th in Fairfax. The return game in DC proved to be back to normalcy for George Washington.
The hosts started out perfect from deep with a 3-for-3 performance from behind the three-point arc in the first quarter to assume a one-point lead after one, and pushed its advantage to as many as 14 early in the third quarter. While Mason would try to rally and enter the final stanza down just four, GW once again asserted itself in the fourth.
Led by Mayowa Taiwo's utter domination inside, with a massive season-high 18-point, game-high and career-high tying 17 rebound double-double evening, GW sent Mason home sad on the short trip across the Potomac. Taiwo, who ripped down her then career-high 17 rebounds in the last meeting between these teams, proved once again to be too much inside, as GW owned a commanding 43-24 edge on the boards. The 21-6 advantage on the offensive glass keyed an 18-6 margin in second chance points, which were critical in the eight-point win. Sheslanie Laureano backed up Taiwo with 14 points and GDUB featured a balanced attack that placed six with at least six points. Laureano also set a new career-high on the night with six assists, while Taiwo did work on the defensive end too with a season-high tying four steals in arguably the best game of her career.
For the Patriots, it was Taylor Jameson who did it all en route to her game-high 20 points.
GW now turns its attention to the road after a three-game homestand. Standing in the way of the Buff and Blue's fifth-straight win are the Saint Joseph's Hawks, who will host George Washington on Sunday at 2pm on ESPN+. The team finishes the regular season road slate at Davidson a week from tonight, before hosting Senior Day at Smith Center on February 26th at 2pm.
