Mayowa Taiwo leads Colonials with eight points, 11 rebounds
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - George Washington women's basketball traveled to Philadelphia on Sunday with hopes of winning its fifth consecutive game. Unfortunately for the Colonials, St. Joe's had other plans. The Hawks put together a strong offensive performance, shooting 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from three, while holding the Colonials to just 34 points in its 57-34 victory.
Without point guard Kyara Frames and starting its 11th different lineup of the season, GW had trouble from the start of Sunday's contest. The Colonials allowed Saint Joseph's to begin the game on an 11-3 run. While the Colonials' defense settled down, GW's offense never found its stride, trailing 31-13 going into halftime.
In the second half, GW came out with a fire, and it looked like a comeback might be in the cards. The Colonials outscored the Hawks 15-7 in the third frame and were able to cut St Joe's lead down to single digits with 40 seconds left in the third. St. Joe's regained its form in the final 10 minutes however, outscoring George Washington 19-6 and wrapping up the W.
The Buff & Blue's offensive struggles came down to two key factors on Sunday, its lack of threes, and missed opportunities at the charity stripe. The Colonials hit only one of their 20 three-point attempts, while shooting just 35 percent from the free throw line (7-of-20).
Next up, the Colonials will travel to Davidson for their final regular season road game of the year. Tip-off between GW and the Wildcats is slated for Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
