The Colonials and Hawks will face-off on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+
WASHINGTON - As the A-10 regular season winds down, George Washington women's basketball is just beginning to heat up. Coach McCombs' squad will look to win their fifth consecutive contest when they travel north on I-95 to Philadelphia for a date with Saint Joseph's. Tip-off between the Colonials and the Hawks is slated for Sunday at 2:00 pm. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
MAYOWA'S MONSTER NIGHT
On Wednesday night against George Mason, Mayowa Taiwo put together one of the best performances of her career. Taiwo cruised to a double-double, scoring 18 points against the Patriots, just one point shy of tying her career-high, while also tying her career-high in rebounds with 17. The junior forward also tied her season-high in steals with four.
This season against the Patriots, Taiwo was nothing short of spectacular. The Hanover, Md. native averaged 14.0 points and 17.0 boards in two games against Mason.
SOME STREAK
Despite a rocky start to conference play, GW has turned things around with four impressive wins in a row. It is the longest win streak for the Colonials since they won four straight games between Feb. 12 - Feb. 28 last season. George Washington hasn't had a five-game win streak since 2017.
Conference standings wise, GW's win streak has done some heavy lifting. GW entered its game against Duquesne on February 9th without a conference win, while occupying the basement of the A-10. Since then, the Colonials have leapfrogged three teams and have moved into 11th in the conference standings. A win on Sunday could catapult the team as high as seventh.
SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S
Entering Sunday's contest, Saint Joseph's sits at seventh in the A-10 standings with five wins. However, inconsistency has plagued the Hawks during the second half of their season, as SJU has only won consecutive games once since Dec. 21st.
When the Colonials take on St. Joe's Sunday, they'll have to avoid giving the Hawks trips to the free throw line. Saint Joseph's is shooting 72 percent from the charity stripe, good enough for third in the A-10.
HISTORY AGAINST THE HAWKS
When GW and SJU meet on Sunday, the Colonials will look to beat the only team in the conference that has a winning record against the Buff & Blue. To date, GW and SJU have played 65 games against each other, with the Hawks owning a slim 33-32 record over the Colonials.
While Saint Joseph's might have bragging rights going into Sunday, there is some silver lining for GW. The Buff & Blue sport a winning record against St. Joe's in Philadelphia, and have won three of their last four at Hagan Arena.
