Women's Basketball Extends Streak to Three in 63-41 Rout vs. Saint Louis

Maxine Engel and Sheslanie Laureano each drop 16 in win
WASHINGTON- If there was any doubt that GW women's basketball is starting to find its stride in A-10 play, the first half of Monday's Valentine's Day matinee showed just how much the team has fallen heads over heels with winning. A streak that started as a road date at Duquesne last Wednesday when the Buff and Blue found their first love to secure Caroline McCombs her premiere A-10 win, blossomed into more than a flirtation after a devoted fourth quarter against St. Bonaventure last game, and is now a deep passion for the taste of A-10 victory after thoroughly enjoying a 63-41 throttling of the Billikens.
The first half was particularly sweet on Monday as GW renewed its vows to defense and held Saint Louis to just 26.7 shooting in the first 20 minutes (8-of-30). Meanwhile, the squad's passion for threes was unleashed in a 6-of-10 barrage from deep before intermission, including a pair each from Maxine Engel and Sheslanie Laureano as they coupled for 24 first half points on 10-of-14 shooting between them. Kyara Frames relished the fireworks and set-up her teammates with four first half assists.
After going on a break for halftime, GW rekindled its defensive proclivity in the second half. The Buff and Blue held SLU without a field goal for the first 4:51 of the third quarter, and ran away with the win thereafter. Saint Louis failed to score more than 12 points in any quarter, while the hosts exchanged love notes with the basket all game long and connected for at least 13 points in all four frames.
Fittingly, Saint Louis' Flowers, Brooke Flowers, that is, paced the road team on the day of love with 14 points (joined by Peyton Kenneddy), but was no match for Laureano and Engel who led all scorers with 16 apiece. GW amassed 17 assists in the soiree, against 13 turnovers, while breaking up the Billikens' rhythm with 16 forced miscues. GW used that edge to run out to a 23-6 edge in points off turnovers, many of which came in a 18-2 advantage on the fast break with defense igniting offense all day. George Washington also owned a 43-34 cushion on the glass, sparked by Mayowa Taiwo's nine rebounds, to go with her seven points, two assists, two steals and a block.
There will be no love lost on Wednesday as GDUB craves redemption versus local foe George Mason. The Patriots broke hearts two weeks ago in Fairfax, VA by securing their first A-10 triumph of the season against George Washington in a close 52-46 affair. GW will look to knot the season series at Smith Center at 7pm live on ESPN+.
