Ty Moore flirts with double-double in the effort
WASHINGTON- GW got off to a delayed start to the A-10 season, but a matinee tip at the Smith Center had the team up early on Wednesday to host the Richmond Spiders.
Facing a zone defense from the Spiders, the Buff and Blue fell behind by as many as 10 in the second quarter at 23-13 before the offense got cooking. GW busted out on a 16-3 run to take a brief three-point edge in the closing minutes of the first half, before preseason All A-10 Team performer and reigning conference player of the week Kate Klimkiewicz knotted things up at 29-29 entering the break. That halftime tie and Klimkiewicz's three-ball foreshadowed the rest of the game.
Richmond again tried to run away with a win in the second half, but every time the Spiders looked to extend to a significant edge, GW found an answer. The game was tied at 38, 40, 54, and 63, and although the home squad never pulled ahead, they certainly had their chances.
In an absolute thriller, GW cut a 63-56 deficit at the 2:29 mark to one after a Mayowa Taiwo dance in the lane and lay-in with :49 to play, and Taiwo was there again with a massive defensive rebound and subsequent foul to go to the line with :16 to play. There she accounted for the game's final tie, only to set the stage for Klimkiewicz. The Richmond senior from nearby Oakton, VA and Paul VI high school made her homecoming special with a buzzer-beating triple from straightaway before she was swarmed by her teammates.
Ty Moore (16 points), Nya Lok (11) and Essence Brown (10) led the way for GW, but Klimkiewicz proved to be too much to overcome with her game-high 20 points. Moore's nine boards led a rebounding effort that gave GW a sizable 13-0 edge in second chance points, but Richmond's 10 three-pointers (four from Klimkiewicz) were the obvious difference.
The Spiders, who were picked seventh in the A-10 preseason poll, had one of the best non-conference slates in the A-10 and entered play Wednesday having won six straight games, having scored more than 80 points in each of those outings. While the vaunted GW defense held Richmond's offense relatively in check, four Spiders in double figures in scoring provided enough firepower.
Up next for GW is a road date against preseason A-10 favorite Dayton on Saturday at 2pm on ESPN+.
