Gingras and Laureano lead GW in scoring during the effort
WASHINGTON- Looking for its first win of the Atlantic 10 season and the 2022 calendar year, the George Washington women's basketball team came off a one-game pause, after Saturday's scheduled game at Dayton was postponed, to host the Rhode Island Rams at the Charles E. Smith Center. However, it was a squad limited by health and safety protocols that took the floor and disappointingly for the GW faithful, the home team just couldn't keep up with the streaking Rams in a 73-42 defeat.
Rhode Island also saw its last game postponed but entered healthy and on a three-game winning streak, boasting four double-digit scorers paced by Emmanuelle Tahane's 14.6 points per game. Tahane had 11 points by halftime on 5-of-6 shooting as Rhode Island built a 22-8 lead after the first quarter that grew to a 20-point margin at halftime (39-19) and never looked back.
With the limited roster and Mayowa Taiwo picking up three first half fouls, a slew in the Buff and Blue got a good chance at experience. Leila Patel drew her first career start in her GW debut and hit two three-pointers for the GW cause, walk-on sophomore Piper Macke played a career-high 9:35 and scored a pair, while first-year walk-on Maxine Engel saw more valuable court time in her 20:44 of action and contributed four points. Eight found the scoring column for the hosts, led by matching nine-point outings from Sheslanie Laureano and Aurea Gingras. Gingras also enjoyed a game-high tying four assists.
Dez Elmore double-doubled to lead the visitors with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Tahane and Dolly Cairns finished with 14.
Up next for GW is a trip to Olean, NY to meet St. Bonaventure Saturday at 2pm on ESPN+.
