WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball will travel outside the friendly confines of D.C. for the first time since late November when it heads to the Bronx, N.Y., to face the Fordham Rams. Tip-off against the Rams is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Rose Hill Gym, with live coverage available nationally on NBC Sports Digital.
FIRST-YEAR FACES FIND ACTION:
In the team's last game against Rhode Island, GW's roster was limited due to health and safety protocols. However, the Colonials' limited availability turned into an opportunity for several players who were able to take their first steps into the Buff & Blue spotlight.
First-year Leila Patel drew her first career start in her GW debut, and knocked down a pair of threes, while fellow first-years Maxine Engel and Sophie Haydon each logged 20 minutes of action against the Rams. Engel pulled in a career-high eight rebounds and dished out the first two assists of her collegiate career, while Haydon chipped in seven boards of her own.
MAJOR MINUTES LOGGED:
Last Wednesday night, Aurea Gingras played the role of Ironwoman for GW, logging a team season-high 39 minutes against Rhode Island. Gingras, whose previous career-high was a 37-minute performance against Delaware in December 2020, also tied for the team lead in points with nine, and dished out a game-high four assists.
Gingras is the first Colonial since Jasmine Whitney to play at least 39 minutes in a game (3/10/21 v. George Mason). Whitney, who averaged 36.3 mpg during her one season in the Buff & Blue, played 39 minutes or more in a game five times last season.
SCOUTING FORDHAM
Fordham, who entered the 2021-22 season picked 11th in the A-10's preseason poll, has had an electric start to its season, as well as the non-conference slate. The Rams have racked up 11 wins so far, including impressive victories against Michigan State (RV), Ivy League favorites Princeton, and MAAC preseason pick Quinnipiac. To begin A-10 play, the Rams fell short in its first contest to La Salle, 71-62, before winning back-to-back games at George Mason and at VCU.
Fordham is led by preseason First Team selection and current A-10 leading scorer Anna DeWolfe, who is averaging just over 20 points a night. Helping out DeWolfe is senior Asiah Dingle, who is averaging 13.9 ppg, and A-10 preseason Second Team selection Kendall Heremaia, who is averaging 11.0 nightly.
HISTORY VS. THE RAMS
Wednesday will be the 30th meeting between GW and Fordham, with the Buff and Blue boasting a 20-9 career record against its A-10 rivals from the Boogie Down Bronx.
While GW may hold the all-time advantage, Fordham has seen the most recent success in the series between the two teams. The Rams have won five straight games against GW dating back to 2017. In the two meetings last season between GW and Fordham, the Rams took home a pair of victories.
