Mayowa Taiwo brings in eight rebounds against the Wildcats
WASHINGTON- A cold January night greeted Davidson women's basketball upon their visit to DC, but that didn't stop a hot Wildcats' shooting show inside GW's Charles E. Smith Center in the visitors' 67-37 win.
While GW couldn't find the range in the first half of play and registered 20 points in the opening 20 minutes on 28 percent shooting from the floor (7-of-25), Davidson found the iron to be kind and connected at a .545 clip before halftime (12-of-22), including 5-of-8 from three-point range. Compounding matters for the Buff and Blue, the hosts couldn't get a three ball to drop, but were able to keep within striking distance on the strength of a perfect 6-of-6 first half effort at the free throw line, paced by Nya Lok, who had seven points and was responsible for half of GW's freebies before intermission, as her team trailed 31-20 at the break.
However, when Davidson opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 39-20 before GW could find the hoop in the second half, it took everything the team had to keep it close. The Wildcats' sixth three of the game boosted its margin to 42-22 at the 3:46 mark of the third quarter, while GW was still looking for its first triple. The squad went on to finish 1-of-17, with walk-on first-year Maxine Engel providing the make.
Led by redshirt sophomore Elle Sutphin, who entered play averaging 13.1 points per game and ranked third in the A-10 in field goal percentage (.534), Davidson showed how hot they can get from the floor. Sutphin hit her first four shots, including two from deep, as well as four free throw attempts in the first three quarters, to top her season scoring average with 14 points entering the final quarter of play and with her team up 23, 47-24.
Sutphin went on to finish perfect (5-5 fg, 2-2 3pt. fg, 4-4 ft) with a game-high 16 points, while Sarah Konstans provided 13. Lok's 7 led GW, followed by 10 others who also found the scoring column.
The Buff and Blue now turns its attention to Saturday when the hope is that the road will get them off the schneid in the A-10. GW visits George Mason just 20 miles away in Fairfax, VA where both teams will be looking for its first conference win of the year. Tip-off from EagleBank Arena is 3pm on ESPN+
