Mayowa Taiwo pulls down career-high 17 rebounds against the Patriots
FAIRFAX, Va. - George Washington women's basketball showed its resilience on Saturday afternoon in Fairfax, overcoming a 19-point deficit against George Mason to force a tie game going into the fourth quarter. However, GW was unable to put the finishing touches on its comeback, falling to the Patriots, 52-46.
While GW's strong second half helped give the Colonials something to build off of, the beginning of Saturday's game was tough. The Colonials allowed George Mason to start the first quarter on a 21-4 run, while shooting 11 percent from the field in the opening quarter. When halftime arrived, the Buff & Blue found themselves trailing by 13 on 20 percent shooting, including 0-9 from long-range.
Following halftime, Coach McCombs' team came out strong, knocking down their first three of the game early in the quarter, and outscoring the Patriots 21-10 in the third. Unfortunately, George Mason rediscovered its scoring stroke in the fourth, dropping 14 points while also making key stops on defense to lock down the win.
GW was paced all afternoon by Mayowa Taiwo, who scored 10 points to go along with a career-high 17 boards. Saturday marked the second double-double of the season for Taiwo. Additionally, Kyara Frames chipped in nine points, and now sits at 986 points for her career. For Mason, three scorers finished in double digits with Jazym Doster leading the way with 13.
Next up, the Buff & Blue will continue its longest road swing of the season, heading off to Olean, NY to face off with St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, February 2nd. Coverage of the 7 p.m. tip can be seen on ESPN+.
