Duo signs with Idaho Falls Chukars of independent Pioneer League
WASHINGTON - Recent GW baseball alums Steve Barmakian and Keagan McGinnis have inked their first professional contracts, signing with the Idaho Falls Chukars of the independent Pioneer League, it was announced on Tuesday.
Operated since 1939, the Pioneer League became an MLB Partner League in 2021 and features teams in Montana, Idaho, Utah and Colorado. The league is intended to serve as a developmental league, with no players having more than three years of prior professional baseball service.
Barmakian completed his time in the Buff & Blue in 2021 by being named to the A-10 All-Academic team. On the field, he started all 44 games, hitting .331 while leading the team with 14 doubles and nine stolen bases. He also ranked second in walks (23), hits (52) and total bases (70). The Westfield, N.J., native appeared in 185 games in his GW career, holding a career average of .293.
McGinnis earned the team's Warren Fulton Award in 2021 and pitched for three seasons in the Buff & Blue. This year, he struck out 32 batters in 18.1 innings and went 3-3 with two saves across 14 appearances. In three seasons, the Haymarket, Va., native appeared in 45 games, collecting six wins and eight saves while striking out 89 in 59.1 innings.
The pair joins a quartet of Colonial alums in the professional ranks: Dom D'Alessandro (Greenville Drive, Boston High-A), Nate Fassnacht (Jersey Shore Blue Claws, Philadelphia High-A), Will Kobos (Greensboro Grasshoppers, Pittsburgh High-A) and Isaiah Pasteur (Hudson Valley Renegades, New York Yankees High-A).
