Winners of seven straight and 24 of their past 26 games, GW softball hits the road to St. Bonaventure this weekend to close out the regular season.
Heading into the four-game set, the Buff and Blue have clinched the top spot in the Atlantic 10's Central Pod with a chance to secure their first conference regular season title.
Sunday's doubleheader is set to be streamed via ESPN+, starting at noon.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW celebrated Senior Weekend on the Mount Vernon Campus with a four-game sweep of Revolutionary Rival George Mason.
The Buff and Blue came out on top in each game of a tight series thanks to excellent pitching from Sierra Lange and Faith Weber and a few timely hits.
Alessandra Ponce had a walk-off RBI single in the first game of the series, while Lange and Jenna Cone boosted the offense with home runs in games two and four, respectively.
The festive weekend ended in fitting fashion with Senior Weekend honoree Amber Lotz making a diving catch behind first base to save a run and seal a 5-4 victory.
STANDINGS CHECK: At 19-1 in A-10 play, GW has distanced itself from Dayton (12-8) and Saint Louis (10-10) in the Central Pod. Fordham (16-0) and Saint Joseph's (16-2) have clinched the top two spots in the North Pod and both remain in contention for the regular season title, heading into their head-to-head weekend series.
The four-team A-10 Championship is slated to run next Thursday-Saturday at a to-be-determined campus site. The bracket is expected to be revealed on Sunday evening.
508 Ks & COUNTING:Â Lange recorded 24 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings of work last weekend, highlighted by 14 Ks in Sunday's opener to equal a career high.
In the process, the redshirt junior from Plano, Texas, became the program's all-time leader in strikeouts with 508 across 538 career innings pitched. She passed Amanda Gabriel (496 from 2007-09) for the top spot.
This spring, Lange has piled up 147 Ks in 127 2/3 innings to lead the Atlantic 10 and rank 41st nationally. Her control has been impeccable, too: Her 9.80 strikeout-to-walk ratio (147/15) ranks fifth in the country.
EVERYBODY HITS:Â GW's .344 team batting average ranks fourth nationally, and it's been a group effort with six different regulars owning averages of .346 or better.
Sidney Bloomfield leads the way at .438 after going 6-for-12 last weekend in her return to the lineup. Cone's .412 average would be a single-season career best, while Jessica Linquist (.404), Lange (.388), Alexa Williams (.361) and Weber (.346) are also among the conference leaders in hitting.
For the season, the Buff and Blue are averaging 7.19 runs per game, which ranks sixth among D-I squads.
Cone leads the A-10 with 15 home runs, and Weber (11), Ponce (eight) and Lange (seven) are also among the conference's top 10 there.
Linquist (1.11) and Lange (1.00) are 1-2 in the A-10 in runs scored per game, while Cone (1.08), Weber (1.08), Ponce (1.05) and Williams (0.89) are all among the conference's best in RBIs per game.
SCOUTING THE BONNIES:Â St. Bonaventure (2-22) broke through last weekend with its first two wins of the spring, splitting a four-game series vs. Dayton.
Grace Perechinsky's walk-off homer gave the Bonnies a 6-5 win in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader, and they also took Sunday's opener, 7-4, behind a six-run second inning and a solid combined pitching effort from Emily Phelan and Ally Haskell.
