Buff & Blue set for five games over four days
Aiming to extend an 11-game winning streak, GW softball is set to play five games over the next four days.
The Buff and Blue make the short trip to Towson on Thursday afternoon before resuming Atlantic 10 play with a weekend series vs. Dayton on the Mount Vernon Campus. (Saturday's doubleheader is set to be streamed via ESPN+, starting at noon.)
With two more victories, GWÂ can match its program record for consecutive victories set during the 2018 season.
LAST TIME OUT: GW has had a break from action since rolling through a four-game sweep of Saint Louis on March 27-28 to improve to 8-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
For the series, the Colonials outscored the Billikens 42-6 thanks to a .442 team batting average and eight home runs across the four victories. Jenna Cone had multiple hits in all four games, hitting .692 (9-for-13) with three doubles and three homers in the sweep, while Faith Weber hit three homers and drove in nine runs.
Sierra Lange, Weber and Megan Osterhaus combined for a 1.91 ERA in the series, limiting SLU to a .179 team batting average with 24 Ks in 22 innings.
NATIONAL ATTENTION: Thanks to its recent run of dominance, GW continues to move up the national statistical rankings.
The Colonials rank fourth in the country in scoring at 7.82 runs per game, while they're also among the national leaders in team batting average (.354, sixth), slugging percentage (.589, 13th) and home runs per game (1.45, 17th).
After committing just one error in four games vs. SLU, GW has moved up to seventh in the nation in fielding percentage (.982), and the pitching staff's 2.03 ERA is good for 33rd among NCAA D-I squads.
STREAK WATCH: On this 11-game winning streak, GW has outscored its opponents, 113-16, while hitting .421 as a team. Seven of the victories have come via run rule.
Lange is the team's leading hitter at .541 (20-for-37) during the run while also flourishing in the circle with a 6-0 record in eight starts thanks to a 0.80 ERA and 45 Ks in 35 innings.
Jessica Linquist has been excellent at the top of the lineup throughout the streak with a .700 OBP thanks to 12 hits and 12 walks, leading to a team-high 20 runs scored.
QUITE THE CAREER:Â Cone long ago established herself among the nation's top power hitters, and the decorated slugger's career totals continue to climb.
With 23 RBIs on the season, the Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native has now driven in 226 runs for her career, good for third among active student-athletes behind Jessie Harper of Arizona and Kendyl Lindaman of Florida.
Cone has hit a team-leading nine homers this spring, bringing her career total to 65, which ranks tied for fourth on the active career list. She's also fifth on the total bases list at 493.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS:Â Towson sits at 9-9 on the season after earning a 5-0 win over Coppin State on Wednesday. First-year Mackenzie Lake has her collegiate career off to a strong start, hitting .475 with 11 extra-base hits and 13 RBIs through 18 games.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS:Â Dayton is 11-16Â on the season (6-2 in A-10 play) after dropping both ends of a midweek doubleheader vs. Morehead State.
First-year Addy Bullis is UD's top pitcher (6-4, 1.99 ERA in 59 2/3 innings), while Megan Ward (.398 avg.), Alyssa Cacini (.333, eight HRs, 25Â RBIs) and Abby Ehrenborg (.295, 10 HRs, 26 RBIs) have led the Flyers at the plate.
