Colonials and Hoyas set for first of two meetings
WASHINGTON - GW baseball returns to Tucker Field at Barcroft Park this Wednesday for a showdown with rival Georgetown. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
OVER THE WEEKEND: GW took 3-of-4 for the second time in as many A-10 series against a top-4 team in the preseason poll, this time knocking off Davidson on the road. The Wildcats had just one loss on their home field prior to the weekend. Harrison Cohen and Jaret Edwards tossed seven-inning complete games and the Colonials outscored the Wildcats, 26-10. The Buff & Blue, at 6-2, sit atop the South Division after three weekends of play.
TURNING THE CORNER: The month of April has been kind to GW with a 7-2 record following a nine-day break from competition. The Colonials put together a seven-game winning streak, the longest for the program since 2010, and at 6-2, are off to the best A-10 start since 2018.
The key has been GW's pitching, which holds a 3.00 ERA and a .211 opponents' average in the last nine games compared to a 5.86 ERA and .279 opponents' average in the first 17 games of the season. Seven different hurlers have sub-3.00 ERAs in April, headlined by Trevor Kuncl's 0.77 ERA (1 ER in 11.2 IP).
ABOUT THE HOYAS: Georgetown had a delayed start to the season due to COVID-19 protocols and is 4-8 on the year following a 1-3 weekend against Creighton. Wednesday marks the first of two meetings between the programs this year after last week's cancellation.
Conor Nolan paces the offense with a .323 average, but Georgetown is hitting just .206 as a team and totes a 5.36 staff ERA. GW is 94-44-1 all-time against the Hoyas and won the only matchup last year, 3-2.
