Buff & Blue make non-league visit to Hawks
Despite a break in its Atlantic 10 schedule, GW softball will face a familiar foe on Saturday with a visit to Saint Joseph's for a doubleheader that won't count in the conference standings.
The twin bill between the Colonials and Hawks is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at SJU Softball Field.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW improved to 12-0 in A-10 play last weekend by sweeping Dayton on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Sierra Lange (2-0, 0.82 ERA in 17 innings) and Faith Weber (2-0, 1.56 ERA in nine innings) were tremendous in the circle over the four victories, lowering GW's staff ERA to 1.93 in the process.
Alessandra Ponce and Alexa Williams led the way offensively. Ponce had three extra-base hits, including a two-run home run that accounted for the only runs in the series opener, while Williams hit .417 with four extra-base hits while extending her hitting streak to 12 games.
GOOD GLOVES:Â GW continues to get it done defensively with a fielding percentage of .983 that is good for No. 5 nationally.
The Buff and Blue committed just one error in the series vs. Dayton, putting their total at 11 across 27 games this spring.
GW's middle infielders are deserving of a special shoutout: Shortstop Hannah Eslick has handled 95 chances without an error, while Amber Lotz has played error-free at second, accumulating 36 putouts and 27 assists.
The excellent defense has been a boon for GW's pitchers, who have ceded just four unearned runs this season.
GOING DEEP:Â Williams' three-run home run in Sunday's series final was GW's 36th long ball of the season. The Buff and Blue lead the A-10 at 1.33 homers per game and have moved within eight dingers of the program single-season record of 44, set during the 2019 campaign.
GW has flashed power throughout its lineup with seven student-athletes who have recorded multiple blasts. It's particularly shown in A-10 play while totaling 20 homers in the 12-0 start.
Decorated slugger Jenna Cone tops the list with nine long balls, including the program's first-ever three-homer game on March 21 at George Mason. Ponce and Weber are next in line with seven apiece.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS:Â Saint Joseph's edged over the .500 mark with a 3-1 win over Penn on Wednesday. The Hawks sit at 6-2 in A-10 play, currently good for second place in the conference's North Pod behind Fordham.
SJU has a veteran lineup, led by graduate student Caela Abadie, who is hitting .402 with seven home runs this season. Pitcher Amanda Herr picked up her team-leading fifth win on Wednesday vs. Penn.
The last time GW faced the Hawks was in the 2019 A-10 Championship with the Colonials winning a thriller, 12-11, on Lange's bases-loaded walk-off hit.
